Does everyone remember how extenisvely Obama used the word UNITY in his campaign? Obama said if elected he would both promote and bring about unity.

My question, where is the UNITY or even the slightest promotion of UNITY? The country seems even more greatly divided than at anytime in memory. The fractures are growing daily. Obama seems to be promoting an increasing level of class warfare and fueling anger, not peace among Americans.

I'd really like to hear thoughts on why the country seems to be splintering at even a greater pace since his election.

And PLEASE, do not break this down along party lines....please do not spout about "Dumbocrats" or "Right Christian Wingnuts". The country is splintering within the parties. Strange bedfellows are being made. The splintering going on goes far beyond traditional Democrat / Republican lines.

I'm Democrat and I feel Obama is causing the friction. Many Democrats feel this. We were expecting a peacemaker (based on his campaign) and instead seem to have gotten an agitator.

Did you read my post?

We don't even have unity within the Democratic party. The Republicans don't have unity among themselves.

Where is Obama's promised UNITY?

The UNITY he spoke of was a marketing scheme to get himself elected. If he was really willing to work with other people, he would stop being so extreme and would take a more moderate approach, instead of trying to shove his far left agenda down our throats. Most Americans lean Center-Right and abhor Socialist ideas or anything that may potentially restrict their freedoms as individuals. No wonder, it is not working!

If Obama really wanted unity he would have smacked down his chief of staff when he made the comment "Rule 1: Never allow a crisis to go to waste, They are opportunities to do big things” White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel told the New York Times right after the election.

This was a direct shot over the bow and a huge signal of what was to come. Nothing about coming together just we can use this to ram our policies through and it's been that way since.
It's a pity really, I wish they could all get together and figure things out for the sake of our nation.

It's in the same place where the promised bipartisanship and actual compassion went when Bush was elected in 2000: a discarded pile of carrots on a stick.

Why would he want to unite the country? A united America could very well turn on him. I think that the people, as a whole, have a much different idea of what changes would be better for them than the ones that Mr. Obama's advisors are trying to push. Much better to have the people divided so there's no effective resistance.

There has not been unity within the Democratic Party within my memory. The Democrats are a contentious, unruly bunch, all clamoring their opinions. The Republican Party, on the other hand, has, of late decades, moved in lockstep. Recently, they are splintering, partially due to their failures in the last two elections, IMO.

I think Obama's calls for unity refer not to lockstep agreement, but working together despite our disagreements. No one is going to get everything they want - that is obviously impossible. However, discussion and consideration of all views is one of the themes of Obama's presidency. Everyone I've seen who has been in meetings with him has said that he solicits opinions from everyone, rather than just letting the vocal have their say. And this is not just since he's become President; they tell us that he has done this for many years.
