By 2012 all incandescent light bulbs 100W or greater will be fazed out. By 2014 no traditional incandescent bulbs will be sold in the US. Meanwhile consumers are finding that the new CFLs are not all they're cracked up to be. Numerous unexpected failures are making the transition anything but smooth. Bulbs that are intended to last ten years or more are failing within hours of their installation needlessly adding Mercury to our landfills as will certainly be the result.
"One of the 16 Feit Electric bulbs the Zuerchers bought at Costco did not work at all, they said, and three others died within hours. The bulbs were supposed to burn for 10,000 hours, meaning they should have lasted for years in normal use. “It’s irritating,” Ms. Zuercher said.
Irritation seems to be rising as more consumers try compact fluorescent bulbs, which now occupy 11 percent of the nation’s eligible sockets, with 330 million bulbs sold every year. Consumers are posting vociferous complaints on the Internet after trying the bulbs and finding them lacking."
"Some experts who study the issue blame the government for the quality problems, saying an intensive federal push to lower the price essentially backfired by encouraging manufacturers to use cheap components."

In other words, a forward-looking plan to reduce national energy usage is being undermined by a bunch of damned capitalists who will screw anybody and everybody just to make a few extra bucks for themselves. Nice.
Anybody out there ever have a CFL glowing after the power has been shut off. I mean like untill morning. This seem to happen with the CFL's made for a dimmer switch. Were these put on the market before they were ready

Weren't we supposed to stop importing cheap Mecury laden products from China?
It doesn't make any sense - what are people supposed to use in outdoor situations? How about in dimmers? Do LED bulbs work there, because CFLs don't.
I haven't had any problems with CFLs I've put in (although the ~20 second warmup when they're cold isn't the greatest attribute). Maybe LED bulbs will be the eventual solution? I thought the light from those still came out too white at this point.
my experience is the same. these bulbs do not last their expected lifetime or anywhere near it.It becomes cost ineffective when a bulb that cost 10x more lasts only a few months... I didnt save enough electricity to justify that expense.
then the stores ask for the original receipt... you know the type... the receipts that fade in one month. like that is going to happen.
a forward-looking plan to reduce national energy usage
I, for one, will find bulbs on sale and buy multiple cases of multiple wattages to last until the ban is lifted. And the liberal nutburgers who devised this "energy saving" scheme slink back to their cubicles to re-invent some new absurdity to justify their government jobs.
They're doing this so in 10 years they'll have another "epidemic" to politicize when they realize that we've got too much mercury in the soil. People are starting to see through the global warming sham, so they're just planning ahead so they have something "catastrophic" to worry about in the future.
Light bulbs aren't going to change the environment. Car exhaust isn't going to change the environment. Volcanoes aren't going to change the environment. Cow farts aren't going to change the environment.
There is nothing the human race can do to destroy the planet. The Earth and it's environment is much more powerful than us and it's going to do what it's always done. It's going to go through cycles, regardless of who's living here and what they're doing.
But we can't politicize that, so the beat goes on...
