Alaskan Natives use power boats and high powered rifles to harvest whale. The Umiak (seal-skin boats) are only pulled out for the tourists.

Below is an image of two Alaskan Natives hauling their whale with two forklifts, in the traditional Native Alaskan way.

The polar bear will likely breed with grizzlies????? Do you realize that will mean the loss of the polar bear? This is exactly what placing them on the endangered species list wants to protect.
That has happened in the past and we still have polar bears...

Rare, very rare, occurrence. If the polar bear loses it's habitat, arctic ice, it may happen at a higher rate but the polar bear species would likely die out. According to the scientists (whom I happen to believe over Wailin' Palin and her self serving 'committee'), the polar bear could become extinct by the year 2050. Very sad.

Default For Gov. Palin, a Rough Return to the Day Job

And then there is the pervasive sense among many lawmakers, Republican and Democrat, that a new political reality has overtaken this remote government seat.

“The source of the greatest tension this year between the Legislature and the executive has been certainly the appearance that the executive is prioritizing her national image, her national brand, over the day-to-day operations of state government and the interests of the State of Alaska,” said Mike Hawker, the Republican co-chairman of the House Finance Committee.

Oh really...

Mr Floyd says "Thank you for the info. The forklifts are a nice touch. Yeah. Tradition."

Correct me if I'm wrong...Politicians, like all us Joe and Jane Averages, generally know very little about the environment. Who does know? Scientists who study it for a living. Only now after many years of study, is the green mentality hitting the mainstream. Why now? It's probably twofold. One. We are likely at a critical point where we need to be thinking in those terms for our long term benefit. Two. There is money / votes in environmental issues and energy alternatives.

The politicians who rally around the issue, or most issues for that matter, are likely just being opportunists. Palin is a study in contrasts. In a place where the environment is perhaps a bigger part of the economy but having Republican sensibilities that seem to put the environment second to a robust economy.

There is little doubt that ecosystems, once not seen as connected, can have a huge impact on the overall balance of nature. Certainly a large reason why such a big deal is made when certain species are in danger. Such danger is usually associated with a larger, more serious issue.

Personally, I see the environmental issue simply. We have nothing if we don't have our health. And we don't have our health if we can't breath the air and / or drink the water. Our mentality (general energy use, transportation, recycling) needs to change. We won't be able to sustain the wasteful lifestyle we've been leading.
