After years of conjecture, details have begun to emerge of a "kill weapon" developed by the Chinese to target and destroy U.S. aircraft carriers.
...
a recent report provides a description of an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) that can strike carriers and other U.S. vessels at a range of 2000km.
...
The size of the missile enables it to carry a warhead big enough to inflict significant damage on a large vessel, providing the Chinese the capability of destroying a U.S. supercarrier in one strike.
New Concerns Over Chinese 'Carrier-Killer'

How long do you all think it'll be before China decides to take Taiwan?

i'm confused, don't they have nukes, didn't they shot down a satallite a while back, i'm not knowledgable about weaponary, but why would the fact that they have a missle that can kill a large target such as a carrier "panic the navy leadership"?

Large carriers and carrier groups are fundamentally vulnerable due to size alone. They can take fairly advanced protective measures - missile interceptors, laser components, and so on. But all of those have flaws, and a sufficiently large attack will probably get through. There's not much to be done about that; we're talking about the nature of technology and the difficulty inherent in trying to protect such large and vulnerable objects.

You really think they would use such a weapon against one of carriers and not expect a full retaliatory strike which would lead to full out war? But then again we don't have anyone in the White House which has any back bone. It’s the 1930 all over again but this time it’s the United States not Europe which are full of liberal thinkers. I say "are" because we are not a united nation. China has learned a few chess moves from their Old Russian allies.

MAD must be maintained. For example, if an anti-missile shield was positioned in Poland, Spetznatz would likely have sleeper cells (possibly even working undercover at the station) and covert operatives stationed nearby to disable it in the event of an attack against Russia, so that a counterattack could be staged.

A little fear mongering eh (Theme song of the Twilight Zone Plays in background)? The GOP never could govern, just back to their usual playbook, fear...

These may help keep those missiles away from our ships.

China is not the first country to develop an ASBM type weapon. Iran announced about a year ago (not sure of the exact date) that it had one.

WTH are you talking about?

We've been at odds with China over Taiwan for probably longer than you've been alive. They're developing weapons specifically designed to destroy our largest naval vessels with a single, stealthy shot.

Not sure if you were referring to me, since I'm not a Republican, but you did quote my post, so who knows. I think you're the one that's confused.

As for your "fear monger" label, would you care to explain that?

The Chinese and the Russians have never exactly been 'allies'. Their mandates and system of gonernment are similar, but thats where the similarities end, They actually have a deep rooted animosity for each other. As to their 'new' missle technology, our fleet is not exactly naked in the face of it. They have plenty of defensive systems, but as another poster said, sufficient numbers WILL ensure that some get through. The Chinese have a system that relys on building large numbers as well. Build it big , build it mean, and build a lot of it. Nevertheless, I don't think that either Russia, or China is in a huge hurry to test their weapons against the US. Even in our current weakened and spread out state, we are still a force to be reckoned with, and we do have some pretty impressive technology of our own.
