It has been reported that the huge area subject to attack by Somali pirates is too large for the blue water navy to patrol.
That is true - if we were locked in the 19th century.

The other problem - the U.S. government has the mandate to defend American flagged vessels, under attack by pirates. But what about other vessels? Perhaps the flag of convenience practiced by shipping will change to governments who will hunt down pirates, and prosecute them.

21st century solution?
Re-flag ships to U.S.A., pay the dues, comply with American regs, THEN
use the low cost / low risk means to scan large areas - i.e., airborne drones that can relay targeting info. And track back the speed boats to their mother ships, and reduce their capability to launch future attacks.
(Euphemism flag off)

Take out / confiscate their mother ships, and Somali pirates may have to find a new vocation.

I never did get the details of how a small group of men on a small boat can take over a large group of men on a ship (large boat).

Do they scale the hull with magnetic shoes and gloves?

Are the pirates all expatriate Navy Seals?

Answers please, and include details.

All seagoing nations have an equal stake in supressing piracy. This is not just our fight. All the nations involved have to develop a joint policy (hopefully one that does not pay any ransom anytime) to share whatever intelligence any one of them gathers on the pirates and then takes joint action against them.

The world should remember the very old British saying - if you ever pay the Danegeld you will never be rid of the Dane.

They have those shoulder fired RPG's, for one thing. That's the main thing I've heard.

I agree. Different countries may have different thoughts but its a common problem and not limited to this area. Satellite intel from the people who have it could really help people in the area who have the other necessary resources. Something akin to the "Skymarshalls" might be viable too.

Nobody cares one whit about soveriegn rights until suez & panama canals can be made a cash cow. Somali waters unpatroled by somalia... as if the world should pay for them to defend their own territory. Easy math is letting the cargo ships defend themselves directly. Whatever dumping or economic harm is being done to somalia, I think the UN should be holding the guilty party flag ships accountable if they mean to participate in civlization. Whomever is providing RPG's... shouldn't have a comfy life themselves.
