Quite so, but the evangelicals began distancing themselves from the Neocons in 2006, and continue to do so.
Perhaps, but I cannot but believe that the picking Palin was intentional in order to get the Christian conservatives to rally behind McCain and the Republican Party. If you look at Palin's fiscal conservative record, it is mixed. She was picked, not for her fiscal conservatism, but because of her social conservatism driven by her religious beliefs. Both Obama and McCain had less support from the religious right compared to their counterparts in 2000 and 2004, but McCain still succeeded in getting roughly 2/3 of their vote. In general, they are losing influence and people are seeing who Pat Robertson, John Hagee, and the late Jerry Falwell are: intolerant radicals on the fringe driven by a literal interpretation of the Bible.
And there was paranoia among certain segments of the American population, claiming that Obama is a Muslism (terrorist) and antichrist. If you google, "antichrist", the second hit is Snopes.com refuting the claim that Obama is the antichrist. These inane assertions are not from ordinary Conservatives who believe in fiscal responsibility, lower taxes, and limited government, but among the most religious who felt threaten about losing their status quo.
I think the Republicans have problems with things like the Ten Commandments and Jesus teachings as recounted in the New Testement. Many GOP followers who claim they are born again but fail to change there behavior to align it with Christ teachings are violating at least two of the Ten Commandment (you don't bear false witness or take the Lord's name in vain).

This one did.
I've noticed this among my own fellow christians. There are a couple christian neocons [oxymoron] but many of us are going in several directions. A few of us have moved left, but some have gone to the Constitution or Libertarian parties.
I surely hope we can move on from the GOP. We can do sooooo much better than those users.

If you go to the Libertarians, you'll have to suppress your tendency of using government as a moral hammer.

Yeah, except most christian libertarians make that the exception. They don't understand that libertarianism includes staying out of people's bedrooms as well.

N-O-N-E of them are the party of God. They all care about one thing. Power.
I think you're right. It's actually hard being a christian voter when you think about all the moral issues at stake. In my case, I agree with the Democrats more than the GOP, but I'm pro-life, and as a matter of conscience won't vote for someone who's pro choice--which rules out most Democrats. On the other hand, the GOP supports starting wars, torture and doesn't give a damn about the poor. The libertarians go too far, I think, in their quest for small government, and the Constitution Party is too much a "right wing christian" party for me to consider them. My minister didn't vote last year, and I don't know what I'll do next year .
