Well, of course. But personal experiences do color politicians.

If 8 congressman were victims of Bernie Madoff, it would be a fair question to wonder if that might somehow affect how they would enact legislation.

If 8 congressman were suddenly involved in car accidents, I'd wonder if that might somehow affect legislation, too.

Yes, that's true, however being a parent is a pretty common occurence, being in an accident or ripped off by Bernie is an exception.

But BOTH men AND women can be ripped off by Bernie or in an accident...why would it affect one sex but not the other?

Well, like it or not, women still bear the brunt of the responsibility for making the childcare arrangements, etc. And becoming a parent for the first time certainly changes your perspective on life. You don't sit around contemplating the meaning of life any more, you know that the meaning of life is to raise your kid.

Re: the threads on CD, yes, they were pretty bad, though I agree with normie that it was not a good time for her to make a run for VP.

Well, SOME women may accept all their own responsibility A N D that of the father but it would be a good idea to sit down and have a talk with the OTHER parent and explain what 50-50 means!
MILLIONS of women have babies and a career...sometimes they continue that career mere days after giving birth..it's nothing new.
What do you think single moms do, just quit working!!????

Just as male politicians get help raising their children , female politicians should also get help....it's called working through, dealing with, life.

One Senator 's wife died a few weeks before he was sworn in...he didn't quit...he went on...took the train home every night to be with his young children...he raised them and had a kinda sucessful career ..becoming Vice President of the United States.

But WOMEN should give it up because they become parents???????

NO!

Oh, spare me! Raised them, yes, but not by himself. First he had help from his sister, then from his second wife.

Who said that? This is a thread about moms in congress!

And I don't need a little lecture from you about how to "deal with" life. I've been a working mom, too, and my youngest graduated from college yesterday; her sister will get her doctorate in two weeks.

No argument from me, in fact that was my point. My point was that life-changing experiences can affect legislation, whether you're male or female.

But just to be crystal clear: If there is suddenly a trend where eight senators are in serious car accidents, whether they are male or female, it is reasonable to wonder if that experience could have an affect on legislation.

Just like it is reasonable to wonder if the experience of having a baby could have an affect on legislation... and yes, the experience of having a baby can influence both male and female representatives.

But sadly, nobody seems interested in talking about legislation, this has just become some circular argument about whether a baby is as time consuming as having a teenager. Bo-ring, and there's just not much to say beyond you want to believe having a baby is exactly like having a teenager, be my guest. Go have a baby, experience if for yourself, and then we'll talk. So I'm moving on, see you on the next thread.

You asked a question...."""Any thoughts on how this will affect legislation?"""

I gave my opinion. (Answer/Opinion: It shouldn't !)

You don't like it....so it's boring.

So I guess women will never be anything more than mommies to you....I say they can be more, much more. I say intelligent women can use their brain to override hormonal surges and NOT be "Mom" to their constituents but remain their Representative!.

That is one big leap of logic.

You misinterpreted MY opinion. I did not say women should give it up when they became moms. I said it's different after you become a mom.
