This is my "take" on the general attitudes of foreign-born Blacks in America. They obviously know that they look more like "us" then White Americans but for many of them there is an effort to distance themselves from the unshakeable stereotypes that plague Black Americans of all walks of life. For others, they embrace the (middle and upper class) Black American culture because it is the one that most readily embraces them.

Also remember that all to often, the only images that foreign-born Blacks have ever seen of Black Americans is that of the underclass so when they encounter "The Huxtables" and realize that "The Huxtables" are not an anomally it is a contradiction of what their (low) expectations were with regard to Black Americans.

I remember having to explain to a friend of mine (Trinidadian) that ALL Black people in America were not slaves when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued; many were free people of color. And that not ALL Blacks were poor until the Civil Rights Act of 1964; the Black middle class existed before that time. I also had to explain the "ways" of the Black middle/upper class and many of the traditions that we embrace. It was an eye-opener because foreign-born Blacks never see the way the other half lives.
I'm actually somewhat familiar with this group of Black Americans but it's such a small group. Also at least out here in PG their kids seem to be embracing the larger hip-hop thug culture of the underclass.

Never heard the N-word, never knew there were different color variations of being black, never knew Blacks were not supposed to do well in school.

That all changed when I went to the mostly black public jr and sr high school where the N-word was thrown around with regular frequency, where I soon found out something was wrong with my skin, and that raising my hands and acing exams were "acting white".

You want all Blacks no matter their background to see life as you do because they all are victims of white racism. Would you then find it hard to believe that many Africans and Caribbean Blacks have negative attitudes with Black Americans based solely on their negative run ins with them? Such as being robbed, murdered, taunted etc.?

I realize the thread is old, but I've definitely seen tensions between blacks and latinos since I moved out west a few years ago. I don't pretend to be an expert, but if I had to venture a guess, I would say that most of the tensions have to do with being members of the same general socioeconomic class. Both African Americans and Blacks tend to share many of the same poor or working class neighborhoods, where life can be a bit raw, and where emotions can run high during economic hardship. They're competing for the same jobs lots of times, and many are competing to get out of those conditions; some others (not all certainly) fall victim to the pressures and temptations of the street and compete with each other in the unregulated and brutally tough underground economies.

In addition to that, they're two different cultures. As there is in just about every ethnic group in this country, there are misunderstandings about each other. Moreover, in both cultures, you have this "Don't take any sh*t from nobody" mentality, which I totally understand, but it's also something that can lead to conflict.

I'm confused. Many Cubans ARE Black. Are they that self loathing?

Many are. I would reckon to say that black Cubans would identify with being Cuban/Hispanic first, and black second. In fact, I would venture to say MOST of those of Latin American stock would "claim" their Latin hertiage before there black.

My family has been black, and has been in this hemisphere, for more than 400 years. Yours has been in Ghana (so you say). Something you seem to not understand is that your family's negative experiences BEFORE you came to America were also at the hands of Blacks - isn't that what Ghanaians are? - and that is WHY your people came over to this WHITE country in the first place. I mean, if Ghana is such a wonderful place, why is your allegedly Ashanti ass living over here thousands of miles from Africa? It just doesn't make sense to me.

I ain't buying your line about being subject to all this adversity created by blacks when you came up and that everything was Nirvana in your white environment? Why? I went to a White private school all the way through high school, and I was subject to the worst, most vile racism by teachers, students and caregivers the entire time. I KNOW everything there is to know about White racism in America. Your entire body of work on this forum sounds silly - and monumentally dishonest.

I understand that is true; however, you seem really happy to harp on every bad experience these people (if not you) have had in their dealings with African Americans while being an apologist for white racism and racist thoughts that have been much more detrimental to blacks here and indeed have caused some of the problems of the native-born black population. As I have said before, my father's people are African American and my mother's Caribbean Latino. Nobody in my dad's family have murdered, robbed or taunted anyone in my mom's family. Nor have they done this to any other black person, foreign or native, nor anyone of any other race. You need to get rid of your philosophy of being an apologist for the white man. You sound pretty doggone colonized to me.

I am quite successful, thank you very much. Not one of you on this forum can tell me or show me otherwise.

We know we are black, and we know we are Latin.

I choose to acknowledge both and not to choose sides.
