Worse, I hate that my family can't watch the nightly news without seeing an ad talking about 4-hour erections. That's just TMI!

We have young kids in this household and I want them to grow up watching the news and learn about what's going on in the world. We have a lot of discussion about what we see on the news... but I'm not really happy about the jokes they make when the Viagra ads come on.

I mean, the ads themselves are ok--it's that line about the 4-hour erections that is just a little bit much to take. I especially dislike how embarrassing these ads make my husband and my poor uncle feel, especially if any of the grand daughters are in the room.
LOL, my personal faves are the KY Jelly commercials.

I understand you completely. However, you must realize the problem rests on the people's shoulders. If sex didn't sell as well as it did, it wouldn't be all over the place. Women objectify themselves in order to get attention from men. The thing is, it works. So as long as men are still don't have any control over their sexual urges, women are going to continue to feed it. I personally wish sex would lose it's current priority status, because it IS disturbing to see these VERY young girls showing off their bodies. Somehow, we as Americans look at anybody who is sexually aroused by a child as PURE evil, yet we put our children out there to be SEXY.

I personally don't have TV either. The shallowness of the culture just bothers me too much.

No wonder we are viewed as "INFIDELS" by some.

Lots of people dislike lots of things. Such is life in a free society.

Your dislike for my speech does not entitle you do stifle such speech, and vice-versa. There is no constitutional protection against embarrasment.

I have been studying the arts like acting for a while now. Through my studies I've found that the battle in American society of commercialization versus art for art's sake has been there from the beginning. And like it or not commercialization has won each and every time.

Somehow, I managed to outgrow being affected by sexuality. I like to look at the ladies in the supermarket, but have no desire to go beyond a glance or a smile. Women are not toys, I gave those ideas up long ago. Sex is great stuff, but it's only another bodily function. The best sex organ on anyone is the part between the ears; all else is just tissue, the real treat is the attitudes that make up the personality. The most glamorous models or beauties are ugly if their thoughts, words and deeds are ugly. The average girl next door can be a true gem if she "gets it" about being human, kind, friendly and loving.

What I do object to is how advertisers try to manipulate people with sex so you'll buy their products. That turns me totally away and I'll make it a point to NOT buy their junk. I won't buy any car because it's a babe magnet, and feel sorry for young men who fall for all that crap. Nor would I ever deal with a woman who is swayed by whatever car I drive. Such people, men and women, are either youthfully naive, or simply superficial drones seeking an identity.

As far as sexuality in movies and TV goes, that doesn't bother me, I know it's there to titillate and raise the levels of ratings or office gossip (did you see THAT scene in....).

The deeper question is WHY does sexuality incite all this controversy, after all, it's just a basic human function and need. IMO, we see the effect of religion here, where, without being asked to do so, a bunch of characters have set up a totally arbitrary set of mythical do's and don'ts that they say define what is "good" (holy) from what is "bad" (sinful). Humbug. Religion is just a means for controlling groups of people, even whole societies, and it has been taken to ludicrous extremes (suicide bombers in Iraq, bombing abortion clinics). A good example of such extremes is all this nonsense about "teaching abstinence" which doesn't work because most people, even teens, do not remain abstinent. Staying abstinent is, in itself, an act of extremism, where we deny ourselves our own identity because we fear being a "bad person" if we "give in to temptation" - TOTAL CRAP. If it weren't for centuries of churchly ranting about sex being a sin, we'd be as carefree as the monkeys at the zoo who fornicate with reckless abandon - many humans do anyway. Until we discard our bogus baptist baggage, we'll always be hung up on sexuality. Religion has turned a thing of beauty into forbidden fruit, which always demands a very high price and makes tongues wag. Enough I say.

But I still resent advertisers using sex to try and milk the money from my wallet.

But there's no escaping it, I guess. Reality is, my family likes watching tv together. We're not about to sit around a radio to hear the nightly news.
Thats your choice. You could read the paper together or view the news on the internet or tell your granddaughter about 4 hrs erections, breast ogmentation, feeling fresh, and warming lubricating gel. LOL. I got rid of my TV.

If anything, American society is sexually repressed. The networks can't even show condom commercials! Janet Jackson's nipple was the cause for Congressional hearings. A lot of people still can't stand the idea that their kids might be taught something other than abstinence (as if that ever works anyway). The FBI under the Bush Administration spent large amounts of money and time prosecuting producers of adult videos for "obscenity". It's amazing to see how Americans are in such a panic over sexuality.

Look at Latin American culture, or Western European culture. They have much healthier attitudes about sexuality than we do.

I think you've been reading my minds. The Europeans have a lot fewer unwed moms too. Sex ed, and the "de-criminalization" of sex (ignoring religion) lets people live normal healthy lives, unlike America, where we're way too hung up with obsessing about other people's bedrooms.

Sexuality in adults is great. Sexuality is children...not so much. I think a distinction in this discussion needs to be made about that.

I have girls and I cannot tell you how distressing it is to try to shop for them once they are out of toddler sizes (age 6). It is like Kohls is marketing to the inner stripper of the elementary school set. It is perverse - there really is no way around it. The last time I went to Gordmans (literally) they had thongs with sparkles and dangling beads for small girls, I am talking like ages 6,7,8. What the hell is the purpose in that? That type of underwear is made to be seen - and just who do these stores think a seven year old would be showing it to?
Again, I have no objection to adult sexuality but I am greatly disturbed by this trend to make little girls into whores. What are we really telling them? That they are smart, interesting, funny, compassionate? Or that one day they will have a great set of T*** and a hot A**?
