Tim Latham, who has spent the last 19 years teaching students American history and government, spent the past school year at a high school in Lawrence, Kan. — and it appears his first year at the school will be his last.
Latham claims it has nothing to do with his abilities as a teacher and everything to do with his conservative politics.
Didn't see anything in the article about him fighting to keep his job ... he went screaming to the media instead ... there's word's for those kinds of people ... Sarah Palin is one.

Just because the article didnt mention it, doesnt mean he didnt try. Besides when an ultra leftwing organization has the nerve to fire someone over thier political beliefs, how reasonable can they be? I hope that teacher sues them for everything they have.
I aligned more with [McCain's] values than I did with Obama, but I treated Obama with fairness."
I have an issue with this. When I was studying government I never knew which side of the fence my teacher landed on. She dealt with facts and asked us what we thought, agreed with, disagreed with but I don't ever remember her saying she favored on over the other. I don't think his personal political beliefs should have been part of the learning process.

Latham also said that Gentry asked him about a "McCain-Palin" bumper sticker on his car.
"She said, 'I don't know how you could support that woman,'" Latham said. "That was the beginning of what was going on. They were trying to find a reason to get rid of me.
I'm not trying to make excuses here but this story sounds so one-sided. I mean where did this conversation take place? I know some people may say it doesn't matter but there's a difference between sitting in the break room discussing politics and being called into the office to talk about work concerns.

"I've never shown an inauguration," he said. "I never showed any of Bush's; I wouldn't have shown McCain's. I was not showing any bias towards Obama ... I didn't intend to interrupt the class."
perhaps it was an issue because this was his first year at that school. Did the other teachers show the inauguration? I remember watching them when I was in high school.
Hopefully, there will be more of this story so we can get a full picture. As of right now it's just like the headline says he "claims" his conservative views cost him his job.
Although I'm all for any teacher who inspires their students to get involved. From other articles it seems that as far as politics go there was only one issue where a student felt the teacher was making unfair comments about Obama. If that's the only thing the school board has to rebuttal with, this is going to be a problem.
2. If his political views were a factor in the non-renewal, it wasn't because he had them but because the district thought he brought them to class with him.
3. We will never know the other side because personnel information is confidential and by law the district is not permitted to discuss it.
yeah I caught that too. The title of the thread is misleading and I know a lot of people aren't going to actually read the story, just comment based on the title.

How can one debate with someone who is so far removed from reality that our school system is an "ultra leftwing organization?" And when that person doesn't know the difference between not having a contract renewed and being fired?
There are people in this world who are unreachable by reasoned conversation and logic.

My mistake. I typed the thread title out after I found the article, then read it and submitted the thread. I failed to change it after reading the article; it was simply a careless mistake, not inentional.
