My ancestors did not live in this country during that time. As a citizen of this country I do accept responsibility for the things done by this society in the past. Slavery is one of them. I applaud this action by our Congress.
What am I suppose to apologize for? My ancestors had nothing to do with slavery.
Maybe it is because I'm white?
Nobody asked YOU or ANYONE ELSE crying in this thread for an apology. The GOVT is OFFERING this apology for saying people actually had the right to own slaves back then. Simple as that. Boy, something is wrong with you people
SMH.......I shouldve knew this would turn into another racist thread!! I'm sorry for even posting this thread here! I shouldve expected closet racists to not understand!! I hope they give blacks reparations just to spite the racists!!!
Is it possible that the reason behind your posting this thread was to get a rise out of folks?
If people don't agree with someone else's point of view, they are automatically racist?
In my heart, I believe most Americans (acknowledging there are haters out there) feel terribly about this awful chapter in our history -- whether it predates our arrival on this soil or not. But to claim reparations after so many generations have intermarried? There are people as pale as myself who have roots in Hispanic countries where some slaves ended up; does that make me eligible if I can prove I have one sixteenth of slave blood in me? It's a tough call.
To put it bluntly, our ancestors DID enslave other people. I'm not a bleeding heart liberal, in fact I am a conservative Christian.
However, I believe that we should apologize for the sins of our fathers at the very, very least.
What was done to black Americans was WRONG.
People were enslaved, and many died. Even not to die but to be enslaved for life was so very cruel to an entire race of people.
Our forefathers were responsible for this and we owe black Americans a huge apology for the injustice.
A whole lot of money was made by enslaving these people, and if reparations to their ancestors is in order I believe it should be looked in to by the US Congress. WE profited off black Americans for almost 200 years and they ultimately suffered for it for generation after generation even after slavery ended.

I honestly dont care about reparations....at all! I have my own money! I do think its just that we as Black Americans get a formal apology on behalf of the U.S Government.......I may not have been enslaved but me and my people felt the aftershock of slavery.
Example:Imagine if your great grandfather was raped of his culture, his land, his identity, his family etc. now your grandfather doesnt have any knowledge of self because all that was stolen from his father and he's affected by that. And so on and so forth......You wouldnt be affected by that?
What I dont understand is why is Jewish angst of validity but Black angst isnt? Why when we as black people bring up our past,we are told to get over it? But Jews have shrines and museums to commerate their history!
My argument isnt that every white person in america is to apologize, whoever said that is totally missing the point! The point is that an apology is due to the descendants of slaves atleast since no slave is alive.

How many generations do you use that excuse to justify failure?

Its not about agreeing.....its about accepting what happened! And taking the blinders off and recognizing what happened. Everyone jumped to reparations and this article has nothing to do with reparations......thats what I found racist. Its just an apology.......
