Gay Rights - Change.org: On Anniversary of Stonewall, Police Raid Texas Gay Bar

Quote:
A crowd of more than 100 protesters chanted "No more!" from the steps of the Tarrant County Courthouse Sunday evening as they demanded an investigation into a police raid earlier in the day at a gay night club.
One patron was seriously injured in the raid, several protesters said, as police used excessive force in making seven arrests. Police defended their actions.
Speaker after speaker demanded an inquiry into the late-night raid at the Rainbow Lounge on South Jennings Street.
"I was scared," patron Todd Camp said at the protest Sunday afternoon. "I have never seen anything like this in my life."...
Witnesses say that police arrived at the nightclub about 1 a.m. Sunday and arrested seven people and that one of those arrested suffered a fractured skull during the takedown and is at a Fort Worth hospital.
Do you think the cops involved in this story were purposefully harassing the people in Rainbow Lounge?

Probably. I dont know if they knew this was an anniversary of gay rights or not but I'd bet money they used excessive force, they do it everyday all across the country. Tasering old ladies, detaining NFL players in hospital parking lots and beating up a bar full of gay patrons is par for the course in Texas these days

Yes. And I can't imagine why it turned so violent and just what it was they thought they were going to find.
The only way I'd excuse this would be if this same police force has a history of raiding bars known to cater to violent gangs/bikers/white supremicist groups. If not then these cops were harrassing these people.

They were clearly harassing the patrons. With that said, if the people were intoxicated in the bar, they could legally be arrested and if they used physical force, the officers had a right to use physical force in response. I tend to think the officers, however, probably egged them on.

I'll also say that this police department is a rather messed up one in general (not talking specifically about this incident, but many).

I don't even understand why the cops were there in the first place. It sounds like they just ended up arresting a bunch of people for "public intoxication". Give me a break. How many people get arrested inside of non-gay bars for public intoxication?

Afoi, I've been curious: What area of Texas are you in? You seem quite familiar with the way a number of cities operate - mainly in East Texas, I think.

I'm not sure that is harassment? Sounds like assault.
