Truth is, if the south is fatter than the north it isn't by much. This thread is therefore not funny and rather pointless. Americans are 2/3 overweight and that is appalling no matter which corner of the country you call home. Lack of exercise and reliance on convenience foods laden with empty calories is the main reason.
Southerners enjoy an easy-going lifestyle, free of the burden of trying to impress everyone. We relish our time spent with family, and often that includes a big spread of food. We could care less about the diva's in Hollywood and don't aspire to have washboard abs or size 0 dresses. As long as there's food, family, and fellowship, there's not a whole lot that's missing in our lives.

Because we have great food and it's too stinkin hot to go outside and jog!

Have you ever been down south? They know how to cook, that's why! I have traveled all over and I much prefer southern cooking to northern cooking. Food up north is generally bland, pasty, tastless, while the food down south is rich, creamy, sometimes spicy, sometimes sweet, but NEVER bland or tastless. Grits with cream and syrup, BBQ ribs, brisquet, chili, mexican food (REAL mexican food, not that imitation Taco Bell kinda stuff), sweet tea, fried chicken or catfish... Mmmm who wants some lunch? If you are a dedicated yankee and can't appreciate this kind of food, I am sorry for you.
We all face a death sentence, some of us choose to die fat and happy.
And, if you continue eating the way you describe, you probably will - sooner, rather than later....
