why are red states red and blue states blue? (CNN, polls, racist)

maybe someone can answer this question for me. I have heard that republicans are racists. why do southern states with huge minority populations vote red? is it because they have more rural areas? what causes a certain state to vote a certain way? if you try to say southern states are "uneducated," remember, you are insulting a huge minority population. I think that it's more of a rural vs. urban thing.
Yes, it definitely comes down to city population vs. rural. But I like to think that the devil lives in the red states & the angels live in blue states.

can't think like that though. if you look at the breakdown by county, you can see that the cities vote liberal. I am trying to get rid of the issue of race when it comes to party. it's absurd. for me, it's a rural vs. urban thing.

because purple isn't cool.... and it wouldn't get as good of ratings on faux noise, cnn and the other shoutahs...
no really, many states in the south used to vote for dems until the civil rights act and then they bolted from the dems .... don't hate, just sayin' it's true.
if you're under about 40 you've basically grown up in a world where blue is northeast, upper midwest and west coast but it wasn't always that way.

Yep, that's what it's been for me my whole life. It's just how it is for now, predictable.
Some Southern states do vote white against black and there are simply more white people. MS is a good example as is AL. Other Southern States like VA, NC, FL and to a lesser extent GA and SC tend to have more northern immigrants, cosmopolitan cities or are have otherwise less racially polarized voting patterns among whites due to greater numbers of liberal whites.
History and culture play big roles in this, but yes, urban areas are more likely to be "blue" for a variety of reasons.
To me, I think the biggest reason urban areas vote democratic is because the people are more exposed to different types of culture, people, life, food, etc. It just makes sense. I'm not ripping on anyone, it's just how it is. If I would've stayed in Menomonee Falls, who knows, I may have been a republican. Although, I was close enough to Milwaukee that I was constantly going there before I moved out of my parents house.
