It's just sad that people are so apologetic about us having bases in other countries while other countries are not permitted to have bases in our country. Double standard?

There are PLENTY of people who've served on the front lines and in foreign bases who do not believe it's our business to have US bases outside of the US.

The founding fathers never intended for this, and to suggest they did not have the vision to know of the world we live in today puts you in the same category as the Living Constitution Obamatrons.

I'm thoroughly satisfied with the poll's results. Perhaps we'll bring home the troops before the Pentagon is forced to bring them back due to government insolvency.

What about the poppies?

You want NYC to go cold turkey?

Who will fund the CIA?

Have you thought this through?

It has to do with being SMART.

Very well said.

Only a complete moron would suggest such a thing and for the record folks- It will NEVER happen. Not in my lifetime.
We WILL stay in the Middle East because we have to so people need to get over it.
We'll also stay in Germany, South Korea (for sure) AND Japan.

Foreign intervention is a fad that is ending soon, like the pet rock or velcro sneakers. When you get $12T in the hole, you don't exactly have money to finance this experiment. Maybe a few bases in S. Korea, but that's about it. Middle East? Forget about it.

While we will see a scaling back and consolidation of some bases, the United States Military WILL remain and retain a strong presence around the world. And we should

Those that say we "will" close all these bases are, IMO, totally delusional and show total lack of concern for the safety of the United States.

We are the worlds leading maker of arms and munitions. We are responsible for something like 65% of the arms bazaar's on the market. Furthermore we spent over 600 billion dollars on arms and war in fiscal year 2008, while the second leading nation, England, spent less than 80 billion.
We also buy up other nations arms, too.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2008...rlier-this-ye/

We cannot afford these wars of attrition, we are bleeding ourselves out to the arms dealers and defense industry who are gorging at the bloody till.

And they wont be giving up their feedtimes without a fight. Try and slow down the military industrial complex and you are likely to end up on the receiving end of a gun.

Mark my words: The closing of bases will not be by choice. It is irrelevant what the president or the Pentagon wants, if the budget cannot support it. The piper must be paid and American will not shut down all social programs and completely militarize like the Nazis did in order to finance its current empire. If America actually implemented a zero social program 100% military funded system, there will be no America anymore, so I will still be correct in my assessment.

Of course, I'm sure during the 1980's, the Soviets (or their enemies) never realized their bases would be abruptly shut down and not by choice. They were just as indignant as many of the people on this thread, especially the ex-military types.

Anyone who thinks this empire will continue to last is deluding themselves. We've only experimented with this policy for 50 or so years and we're on the cusp of failure already.
