How could this happen to what used to be the "breadbasket of America"?

This little smelt should die off, it has such a narrowly defined requirements for its living environment. This smelt has lost the battle for Darwin's theory of evolution, it needs to go the way of the other fossils.

The endangered kangaroo rat lives in the San Joaquin valley too, and when those farms dry up, so will thousands of the little rats.

They grow so much food in that valley, even here in Wisconsin we have row after row of carrots and other vegetables from Fresno, CA. They also grow a huge amount of cotton their too.

Sorry tree hugers, but the smelt matters for crap, this is an example of what happens when the loony left is running the show.

You must be Americans. The US has got to be the only country more worried about money then the health of the environment. If these smelt die off there will be a major impact to larger fish that depend on them as a food source. And as far as "Darwin's Theory", if you were actually educated you would know that his theory was about natural selection. There is no natural selection happening here, it is murder. Human beings think that we are so superior and we can do what we want. You must remember that when any species becomes extinct it has a major impact on the overall food chain and the environment. What if these fish feed on mosquito's and after we murder them off the mosquito population increases, passing more disease to humans and animals, not to mention they are annoying. Just using that as an example. There are other water resources that farmers can use to water their crops, they are just gonna have to stop driving 45,000 dollar 4x4's that guzzle gas and buy a more fuel efficent vehicle so that extra money can go towards watering their crop. There are answers out there so everyone is happy. Dont be so lazy.

Here in Texas they are paving over some of the most fertile cropland with subdivisions.
Blackland Prairie land is becoming a sea of asphalt and cement.

That happened in eastern Kansas too due to urban sprawl.

You are clueless on this topic. The particular valley grows a significant portion of this country's fruits and vegetables. The smelt is not a native species to the area. Politicians withheld water for votes, plain and simple. Thankfully for the time being I believe the area has recieved planty of moisture and this is not an issue at the present time.

Ah, there is more at stake that than farmers... like the 23,000 folks who work in the $1.7 billion fishing industry that spans the entire Pacific Northwest.
