So how to prepare for this, aside from the obvious 'buy gold' mantra. Buy some of the cheap housing out there and hope to find someone able to rent it?

You should dig a bunker and move in, because the world is surely coming to end.

I am not going to do anything because I know that Russian oil companies MUST sell 30% of their oil in Rubles, and they can sell the rest in whatever currency they want. Europeans pay in Euro, and the Chinese pay in whatever currency they feel like. It has been like this for a long time.

Happy digging.

The oil transactions for the remaining balance were usually in dollars, and the Russians are moving cautiously, but looking for ways to avoid using the dollar. This trend is accelerating among many other countries as well, and if the dollar stops being the 'oil' dollar, then it is truly 'fiat', and backed by absolutely nothing.

See the date in that article. And if you keep looking, you'll see that these talks of gloom and doom have been going on since 2003, or ever since the talks about The Iranian Oil Bourse begun.

Yes, and the one I posted is a year and a half old, yet the topic is same: Russia and USD oil sales. My point is to show there is nothing new about the USD horror stories.
