To us, perhaps. But "head only" bowing in Japan is like a left-handed handshake in the U.S. With a limp wrist.
Given the Emperor's advanced age and status, Mr. Obama did the right thing. The fact that he even tried the full bow impressed the heck out of the Japanese.
I wish that he'd checked with me first, though. I could have told him the secret: keeping one's thumbs aligned on the outer seam of one's trouser legs, mentally imaging a ramrod straight back, and counting one....two....three, before straightening up.
And for God's sake, no simultaneous handshake. That's as bad as not making noise when slurping your noodles.
(I'm headed back to Japan on Wednesday. I can taste the namba udon now!!!!)
Yeledaf you kill me. LOL I am still laughing. The thumbs and the hand shake... priceless. and I agree to a point. But a formal head bow isn't a bad thing amoung those who consider themselves equal.

That's certainly true. You have to ask yourself, though, how many equals you run into when you're an Emperor.

That's what this whole thing is really about, who is equal/who is better. So many people are locked into the "We're #1" mindset that anything but a show of superiority is seen as a weakness. AND TAKEN SO VERY PERSONALLY! On the world stage that isn't going to fly but like I said before...that's why "average american's" are not international diplomats.
Sorry, I should have said google bush+bow+photo not, bush+bow. And if he was wrong so were a lot of other former presidents who have bowed to world leaders in the past.

You are correct about bowing technique, sensei. But although the Emperor does have advance age and status, the President has status of his own. As you know, the degree of depth of the bow is dependent on the status of the "bower" as well as the "bowee".
The top newspapers in Japan would not even print the picture of hussein obama's groveling because they said it showed him as weak and they worried about the citizens seeing America having a weak president.
We have a clown in the white house shaming America around the world.

Yeah, after 8 years of pride this is what we have to show the world, diplomacy.
