Officials in Virginia say a college student was shot to death, and another one injured, while collecting frogs for biology class by a hunter who says he mistook the classmates for deer.
This is really sad. I thought hunters had to have a visual confirmation and not fire blindly. I wonder if this was a hunting area? Were the students going there knowing there were people with guns shooting things?
This happens all the time. In Maine several years ago a woman was shot as she hung clothes out to dry in her own back yard. It was not a stray bullet either, the hunter said he thought that she was a deer. Apparently he didn't see the house looming up behind her.
30 years minimum sentencing for this kind of wrecklessness sounds right to me.
I have my doubts this was truly a case of mistaken identity. As a hunter, you have a duty to do two very important things before taking every shot:
-Make a definite confirmation of your target's identity
-Be sure you have a suitable backstop behind your target
A hunter who abides by those simple rules will not mistake humans for animals. Simple as that. As a result - since the precautions are so simple - the penalties for ignoring them should be very harsh.

maybe i was giving you too much of a benefit of the doubt when i mentioned the other day that i know you can be rational at times.
i agree with the other posters; there is no reason why this kind of reckless shooting should be punished leniently. there is no reason ever to fire a weapon unless you know exactly what you are shooting at.
