I don't understand. I thought the cross represented something holy. Why would something sacred be put on the exterior of a car where it can be wrecked, defaced, covered with dirt or banged up?
Wasen't Jesus treated the same way?
A license plate does not establish a religion.
If you want a hannukhah, Star of David, Crucifix on your own car, it's no one's business.
COLUMBIA, South Carolina — A federal judge ruled Tuesday that South Carolina can't issue license plates showing the image of a cross in front of a stained glass window along with the phrase "I Believe."
U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie said in her ruling that the license plates was unconstitutional because it violates a constitutional ban on establishment of religion.

Certainly not the state's. If you put it on your car, that's your business. If the state prints it on your car's license, then it's the public's business. The state representing the public in our system, you know...
Fine, then there should be NO PERSONALIZED plates at all..since you say they are STATE OWNED ....to include your favorate team, save the polar bears, etc

and that inclueds ATHEISM,,,which like all the ISM's (judism, budism, catholism) is a religion
Atheism is a religion like not collecting stamps is a hobby.
No. I am against this. If you want to show your faith, you should be able too. Sure, when I see it, I will think you are obsessed with your religion but is it YOUR car and YOUR faith. YOUR PROPERTY!
Just like no one can tell me that I am not allowed to have "I love Darwin" on my car.
It's OK for people to put religious statements on their vehicles. And they do it all the time. Bumper stickers, Jesus fish, etc.
It's NOT OK for the state to put it on your car.
There's a solid line that SC crossed and it should have known better w/o a federal judge having to slap their hands.
Does any intelligent being truly think that a license plate with these things on them is the government establishment of a religion? Good God. Then I guess the crosses on national cemeteries are next?
I'm not sure about every National Cemetery but cross-shaped headstones have never been allowed at Arlington.
It's refreshing to learn that there's still some rationality remaining in the federal judiciary after the past eight years.
Don't be timid about saying that it's Bush's fault. That's the repeating refrain these days. We're used to it, even though it's getting old.

The markers have crosses on them, probably to permit uniformity of the landscape. Individual markers may have other engravings, such as Star of David, yet the overall look of them is the same.
Why can't it be the same with license plates if people want it?
Well, if "I believe" is allowed, let's all come up with our own. Pentagrams, KKK, yin yang, Star of David, Question mark, OM, Dancing Shiva.....infinity.....if Christians ruled this country, they would name everything Christian. " He Is Risen" boulevard. "No Sin" circle " Cross St" "Lamb" terrace. "Mother Mary" Avenue." "Baby jesus" toy Emporium. "john the Baptist" plumbing supply.....on and on....

I'd guess they wouldn't allow a JIHAD license plate either, so on the whole maybe the policy is pretty balanced.
Except that they allow a cross on a Chaplain's license plate. Aren't all Christians called to be evangelists? That means every one of us could have a cross, if we desire one.
I think we've just gone full circle. Shows how silly the whole thing is.
