You can read the link to see how much it cost just to build light rail. And It only runs at around 30 MPH.

"All together, the planned corridors will add 30.2 miles of light rail to the city."

"estimated last year that the lines will cost a total of $2.6 billion to build,"

That about 7.8 billion dollars for 90.6 miles..

So for 31.2 billion dollars you could go 362.4 miles...

On light rail...I'd bet high speed rail will cost more...

Now figure that for going from Dallas to LA.

Then there is something definitely wrong with America that costs are that high for such a small length of track.

Yeah, but wouldn't you rather have better military stuff? That's what we spend our infrastructure modernization money on. We have great ships and planes.

Apparently you haven't noticed that China has ramped up their military spending and building for the past decade or so.

But folks keep buying everything made in China.

My comment was tongue-in-cheek -- I was joking.

My biggest worry is that something going that fast would make a very big mess if terrorists blew up the track just ahead of it. We can't keep them off planes so how do we stop this from happening?
It would also help LA and OC too. Visitors to Las Vegas- and there are millions- might decide to opt for an afternoon at the beach or at Disney if they are a few hours away on a train.

I've noticed but it's still is crumbs compared to us. I think if you add up the defense spending for all the other countries on the planet it's only a small percentage what we spend.

Everything costs an arm and leg nowadays here. Just look at the Big Dig. It cost Boston $15 billion and 20 years for 3 miles of highway tunnel! The Chinese city of Shanghai built 30 miles of highway tunnels for less than a third of that and within 5 years. There are now 20 underground highway tunnels connecting the two sides of Shanghai.

Our high GDP is just an illusion, pumped up by high asset prices. The main reason we aren't seeing runaway inflation is because of cheap Chinese goods allowing the average middle class American to still have a fairly decent buying power. Take that away and our existence won't be so different from the French, or even the developing Chinese themselves.
