Somali pirate stock-market: "we've made piracy a community activity."
Somali nautical pirates have established a stock-market where guns and cash are invested in upcoming hijackings, with shares of the proceeds returned to investors. Somali pirates have been paid more than $100 million in ransoms the last two years, said Roger Middleton, a piracy expert at the London-based think tank Chatham House. The average ransom is also up, from $1 million per vessel a year ago to about $2 million today.
But while some of this money has ended up in the pirate havens of Somalia, millions have been laundered through bank accounts in the United Arab Emirates and other parts of the Middle East.
The so-called "godfathers" of the illicit operations, according to investigators, include businessmen from Somalia and the Middle East, as well as other nationalities on the Indian sub-continent. There have also been reports that some of the money from piracy ransoms has gone to Islamist militants.

I can end this in six months a year tops.Bring back privateering, let's set up "private" dummy ships heavily armed and set up ambushes for the pirates. Kill them as they approach, .50 cals and RPG's ,no arrests, just an oil slick. It worked against Blackbead and it will work now. No courts, no lawyers, you approach you die, you are a mothership?you die. You are a basecamp?you die.

But..but...that's inhumane! These people need to be apprehended, tried in court and convicted. We can't just go around killing people now can we? I mean were better than that aren't we?

...dangers involved. "Four months ago, during the monsoon rains, we decided to set up this stock exchange. We started with 15 'maritime companies' and now we are hosting 72. Ten of them have so far been successful at hijacking" Mohammed said...
"The shares are open to all and everybody can take part, whether personally at sea or on land by providing cash, weapons or useful materials ... we've made piracy a community activity." ... Somali pirates create local Wall Street.
These guys have RPG's and mansions and stuff. What ever happened to the pirates I grew up admiring, with musketts, bad teeth, rum, swords, parrotts, etc?
"I don't want to be a pirate"
These guys should be swimming next to Davey Jones' locker just for ruining the classic image pirates had.
Am I the only guy who hates how the media is using the term "pirate" to describe these people?
They are not "pirates." They are Islamic terrorists whose only distinguishing feature is the use of maritime resources. Apart from that, they are the same kind of people we are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The media needs to pull its head out of its ass and stop using false information and euphemisms to "educate" people about world events. It does no good and actually emboldens our enemies.
they are thieves stealing resources bound for the united states (and other countries). i can't help but think that there is much more involved to the entire story -that they are being allowed to do these acts for some advantage to someone.
how hard would it be to arm these ships for self defense?
