...Silmi told The Associated Press at an empty restaurant near her home southwest of Paris, her large eyes peering from a slit in her veil. "Lots of Christians live in Morocco and we don't make them wear scarves."
What do Christians in Morocco have to do with veiled Muslims in France? She's taking the right approach by complaining and raising awareness of this possible ban, but comparing Morocco to France????

Silmi, the Moroccan woman seeking French citizenship, began veiling herself completely only after coming to France in 2000.
She hasn't been 'veiling' her entire life, but in the full article states that she found herself growing more deeply religious, and insists that it wasn't her soon-to-be ex husband's doing.

Unlike Muslim headscarves, full-body, face-covering robes are a rare sight in the streets of France, home to an estimated 5 million Muslims, the largest such population in western Europe. France's main Muslim leaders have declared that Islam does not require women to cover their faces with niqabs or burqas.
People walking about fully veiled (in this time of increased terrorist threats and actions) can present an a problem. What's to stop terrorist from posing as a fully veiled Muslim woman? If the French Muslim leaders have declared that full burqa or nigab is not required, why shouldn't France pass a law banning full veil?
Wondering that Sarkozy is supporting this. He's actually far left.
Sarkozy is not in the far left of the French political spectrum. He was the president of the UMP, the French conservative party. Liberal in France(and in much of Europe) usually refers to those in favor of laissez-faire economic policies; it isn't the same as social liberals in the United States. The leftists of France actually hate Sarkozy.
This move to ban veils is merely another reactionary move towards the immigrant underclass of France that appears so threatening to the status quo. The French weren't prepared for the lasting effects of mass Muslim immigration, and as such anti-immigrant sentiment has grown. This move rather than easing tensions will probably inflame them.. The full veil isn't even that common amongst French Muslims.
Good or bad? Even though I despise Islam and all, I do not think that they should ban the veil. It doesn't harm anyone. If a woman chooses to be covered, then let her. And what if she is cold? For real? Will they ban scarfs too?
The French feel this aspect of Islam (the requirement women be covered in public) is dehumanizing and degrading to women. I agree. I'm not sure about legislating it however. Many women may be forced to become shut-ins if their husbands refuse to let them out in public with their face showing.
Why cover your head in church? Why not? (http://www.compassnews.net/Ng/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=30826 :why-cover-your-head-in-church-why-not&catid=645:religion&Itemid=691 - broken link)
huh? what are you talking about? The U.S. is even worse, much worse. Look how many here don't even speak english. Everything is in spanish.
The United States is a dynamic culture, built on immigration and blending of cultures and races.
France is not. Sweden is not. Germany is not.
In a couple of generations, children of spanish speaking immigrants in America won't know Spanish anymore than the descendants of the masses of Germans that came over here today know German. Of course, we delay that process by catering to Spanish speakers, but really, if Spanish speakers want to remain ignorant of the dominant language and culture, they do so at their own peril, and have no one to blame but themselves for non-advancement in this country.

There are actually laws in some US states against wearing masks in public for reasons of public safety and security. How would you feel walking down the street and encountering someone wearing a hood and ski mask? If masks are banned for security reasons, rather than for religious reasons, I would have no problem with the ban.
I believe tinted windows on cars fall into the same category in some areas where they are illegal.
