I heard that most phone service providers were donating free time. Maybe that was just for communications to Haiti or something, but they sure as hell can afford to donate free calls for people giving donations too. I would imagine that the phone service providers are doing much better financially than The NYT.

I think the entire donation will go on your phone bill when you text the number. Therefore the donation will go on the Time's phone bill. I don't think it is about air time.
And then they literally had a piece talking about all the scammers and extortionists in Haiti, IE discouraged people from donating. Real generous stuff right there.
