Aunt typically I applaud your threads...but this is a duplicate thread that ran on and on for months before the Mod's finally shut it down due to the racist trolls that came out of the wood work. Hopefully this will not be a repeat performance. By the tones, its starting to ramp up to that.
I don't think race plays a role in who tips well. Circumstances, location, and satisfaction with service are far more pertinent. Blacks are likely to be routinely given inferior service to that of whites in many places around the country, and I don't blame them for tipping accordingly. After all, they deserve the same level of quality service as anyone else. In restaurants for instance, blacks may not be given the best seats, seated near the bathroom or the noisy kitchen. Or blacks may not be waited on as promptly as their white counterparts. Service may not be as respectful or as enthusiatic as it is with others. I have friends (white and asian) who never tip.
That's because usually it is 1 of our cousins making the food and we need to show respect!
Seriously though, my Mexican mother will bless the money by the cross and then leave every cent she has in her purse. I have to tell her to stop, but she knows that some of these people have to support their families on that tip. If it were a pregnant woman serving us...forget it, she will probably leave 20 on 10, then give her 5 blessings before she leaves the door...

Agreed. Came back to this today and, absolutely, just another opening to the racists to bash blacks. Was there really a pressing need to open this discussion... again?? There are cheapskate white people but on average I suspect there are enough generous ones to make up for the shortfall. How many African Americans are paid enough to make them want to be generous, period? Black people come by their spendthrift ways very honestly. The concept of 'tipping' is a difficult one for a culture so downtrodden to fully grasp lets admit it. AUM this is yet another evidence of your propensity to troll under the radar. Kindly refrain from insulting my intelligence with a justification.
Although her Atlanta area restaurant is relatively young and most likely prone to new start-up headaches, one of the things that McGinnis never expected was the way that some of her African-American customers failed to leave behind a tip or gratuity. Almost right away McGinnis, a 38-year-old former social worker turned entrepreneur, noticed the difference between the tips she received from her African-American and white clientele.
Yeah, I don't think it's really a race thing at all. Other people parrot someone else's opinion and somehow it becomes a blanket common misconception. I think people hide behind that excuse as a way to vent their racism but in a apparently socially respected way.
After years of bartending, cocktailing, waitressing, & hairstyling myself, I have to say that frankly the WORST tippers out there are the people who have obviously NEVER waited on other people as a job before.
People who have NO service experience are usually the most demanding and crappiest of tippers.

If you can't afford to tip, then don't go out to eat.
Certain races might be poor tippers but many waiters racially profile and provide poor service assuming you will not tip well based on your race. They are not rude but they do the least possible and are not really that friendly. I'm Asian Indian but was born and raised here. I know many Indians in my parents' generation are poor tippers but that is largely a cultural issue because in India, you are not asked to tip and thus my parents generation typically tip 10-15%. Our generation is obviously not like that because we are familiar with the custom of tipping 20% but we still get treated poorly because they just assume we are like our parents. In fact, I feel like I have to over tip at times to send a message that my generation does tip well and to provide good service the next time I come in to that restaurant.
Unless you are a minority, you don't really understand this concept. It's always a crapshoot with regards to receiving service. You just hope you don't get that racist server who is going to profile you. And I know this is somewhat true because I have white friends who are servers and they admitted that some of their fellow servers do harbor these attitudes. And I notice the difference in service if I'm dining with white people. I'm assuming that many of the waiters on this thread probably treat Black people differently assuming they won't tip well. All you are doing is reinforcing that stereotype because if you provide them with bad service, they probably won't tip well.

Best Post EVER on this subject...Wish i could rep you more than once.

Yes, and to expand on this point - and this is completely regardless of your race - if you aren't tipping, it must be most unfortunate that you cannot return to any restaurant you've previously visited because of your cheapness. Whether or not you believe it - they WILL remember you if and when you return. And who knows - you may already be featured on this website:
