Just checking in to see what the vibe is for Portland -- I was told they are mostly in Boston/Cambridge but Portland seems like the place that at least ought to have a start up community with its progressive vibe, its brewery and local foods culture, etc. Looking to move home to New England and my husband specializes in software start-ups and we don't really want to live in hectic Boston again.

Appreciate any info.

Thanks!

...what does that even mean?

Portland, Maine is certainly not known for having a strong job market, software or otherwise.

No, but there are several companies in the ring of towns around Portland. Idexx comes to mind in Westbrook.

While headquartered in Westbrook, Idexx is a multinational corporation these days founded some 30 years ago - far from startup status.

To answer OP's question, I don't think there's much of a tech buzz in Portland to begin with, far less so in terms of notable startups (although I haven't lived there in over 4 years, I don't believe that's changed).

Folks there might free-lance, or bring remote-employment in from out of state. In 2012 I worked for a software company in Boston whose CTO (living in York county) did the same while I was there.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't want to live in Boston, either! However for better or worse, Maine simply doesn't hold a match to the economic opportunity that exists there, in my experience.
