I am coming to Scarborough next week to have some surgery done, and would like to know if there were any places in the Scarborough area close-by (don't want to drive around too much - will be recuperating for a while) that I could check out once I start feeling better. I'll be in Maine for a total of 9 days. Any sights or beaches in particular I should visit? A good spot to view the ocean? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

From your other thread:

Quote:
Where are you coming from and what type of stuf are you into?

my initial suggestions

Prout's Neck (down the Black Point Road) is pretty. Dine at the Black Point Inn for dinner and some stunning views of Sunset over water with Mt. Washington, NH in the background. Yes, I said that correctly, watch the sun set over the water... the peninsula, and the Inn jut out into Saco Bay and you can see water, beach, and White Mountains of NH to the West. pretty view. The food is so/so... a bit pricey for what you get, but you can't beat the view.

Also, check out the Old Port area of Portland less than 10 min. away. It's a cute little area with nice little shops, restaurants and some galleries.

I would second seeing the marsh (it's stinky at low tide, but no less attractive). Seeing Old Orchard Beach would be nice, but it's usually really quiet this time of year (but lunch at the Strike Zone isn't a bad idea... good calzones and BIG burgers).

Freeport and L.L Bean are a popular spot, and you may want to check out what they're offering in terms of "Adventure Schools" this time of year (though that would probably depend on the recovery process you are going to go through).

The white Mountains of NH aren't too far, nor are the Mountains of Western Maine (Bethel area) if you're willing to drive a little. Bridgeton and Naples on the way are cute too (but again, quiet this time of year).

Good luck on your surgery and a speedy recovery!
**Edit** Just remembered Ft. Williams S.P. in Cape Elizabeth... Also very pretty and home to Portland Head Light.
