I know nothing about the area, I have read Beaverton and Hillsboro are nice areas but they look like a bit of a drive from lloyd center We have small children and are looking to rent in a nice area close to parks. We are fine with townhomes or small homes in a developed neighborhood.

Can't miss, walk to work neighborhood, is the Alameda grade school enrollment area. Finding a rental may be a challenge but it is worth the hunt.

Useful links talking about the imbalance in the enrollment at grade schools in this area: Grant cluster K-8 enrollment process - System Planning and Performance - Portland Public Schools

Beverly Cleary grade school should be fine too.

It might also be worth pointing out in case you didn't know that Lloyd Center is just within the Free Rail Zone. This means if you work there, you could choose to live pretty much anywhere within the downtown area of the city and commute to work on transit for free (and yes, there are parks and several townhouse complexes within or walkably adjacent to the city core).

I don't think the free ride area s a significant issue. However, since the Lloyd center area is on the MAX line almost anything convenient to those stations would be in play. Orenco station area comes to my mind.

Frankly even the NW District is an option as there are bus routes that serve both neighborhoods.

Where on earth did you get that impression??

Several months back a high school student was killed by mistake in a gang drive-by in the park to the south of the Lloyd Center while walking with friends, minding his own business. His friends & family were so upset that the perps were identified which is unusual with gang shootings. To the best of my knowledge this was the first time such a thing has happened any where around there. The young adults who do this are engaged in tit-for-tat shootings, they don't live in the vicinity at all.

The Lloyd Center area has two well attended cinemas, two popular hotels, Kaiser Perm's administrative offices, an athletic club, State office building, Bonneville Power administrative building, another general office building, a tower style continuing care retirement community, Safeway grocery store, and mall with Nordstroms/Macy's/Sears and other retailers. There are two MAX stops that serve the area.

My husband is interviewing for a location management position and we are just concerned this isn't a good retail location. I looked at the list of shops and it seems like a wonderful place for shopping but because of other comments I was worried about safety thank you for your responses they are greatly appreciated

I am from So Cal as well, been here almost two years now and I can tell you... NO part of Portland is like So Central LA... not even close.... yes, there have been some shootings and such, but nowhere near the same level as So Ca... I have never felt unsafe here... couldn't always say that in So Ca.

Lloyd Center has its fair share of crime and a handful of shootings in the past few years (google it if you want details). I know youre concerned about it being compared to SoCal (I lived in LA) and the level of crime is nowhere near what you see down there but there are so many better neighborhoods with equally good or better shopping. The chances of actually being involved in something are slim but personally I wouldnt live over there
