Im sure you all get plenty of these posts, so bear with me please!
My husband and I are both from Louisiana and are looking at different places to move. We have 4 children, age 9, 7.5, 5.5, and 2.5. We are looking to move in the next 2 years.
I have a BA in Sociology and worked with child protection as a foster care worker and later as an investigator, but quit to go back to school to get my degree as a nurse. I will graduate May 2013 and am considering either 1)applying for positions in Portland or 2)working in Louisiana for a year and then applying in Portland.

Do any of you know what hospitals are in Portland?(I will hopefully be working Labor and Delivery). Also I eventually plan to go back to school for my MSN as a Certified Nurse Midwife...Anyone know what the outlook is there for a CNM?

Would love to hear whatever advice you have!(esp regarding school, gifted programs, areas to live, the weather, etc)!

Oregon has recognized Nurse Midwives for at least 40 years, I believe OHSU has a program.

Were I you I would apply at Kaiser Permanente. They have a hospital in the Sunnyside neighborhood and another under construction in Hillsboro. Just guessing at the demographics but odds are the Hillsboro hospital will see a lot of new moms.

I would recommend OHSU as well, but I would also recommend broadening your scope beyond Kaiser to the other groups (both separate clinician groups and groups that are owned by other hospitals/health systems such as OHSU, Providence, and Legacy.

I think that CNM's will do well with healthcare reform, both locally and in general.

Are there are lot of CNMs who practice independently? My future goal is to have my own birthing center and/or practice with hospital rights.

I do know of two women who are independent, and I've heard that is pretty common in Portland. But, since I obviously don't have the equipment to need such services, I admittedly don't pay that much attention.

Independent CNM's and CNM's in standalone group practices, yes.

Licensure has been a hot topic of late:

Personally I'm in the "license them" camp, but to each their own.
