I have noticed home prices in north portland are cheap (relative); and not bad homes either. Why are the prices drastically different than other areas of portland?

For the most part it is pretty safe (subjectively speaking of course), depending on where in North Portland, it might be a little run down, but that is one of the areas that people are looking to move to that can't afford the more expensive neighborhoods.

Personally my wife and I love North Portland, especially around Kenton and everything south of that neighborhood (though not much north of there in the way of housing.)

A good place to check on any address, crime stats, taxes, property value, etc. is at PortlandMaps.

That's pretty much on par with my neighborhood but then again, I live in SE east of 39th so it may as well be felony flats.

North Portland has a bad reputation. There are still some pockets that aren't great but for the most part, it's not bad. St. Johns is a sought after neighborhood with some others nipping its heels. The schools aren't great, or at least their ratings aren't, which will factor into the house prices.

In most parts of N Portland, you won't find rows of craftsmen bungalows with stately trees. Those tend to be interspersed with ranches and other more modest homes.

My cousin just bought a house in North Portland. There are pockets of bad and/or sketchy parts. He dosen't live in the best part but it's still not that bad. The various neighborhoods seen to be holding more community wide events that brings people together.

That type of neighborhood can run you $600-800K in Portland.

Safe? Depends on where you are. Like PP said there are bad pockets all over, including near UP.
