This won't mean much to people who aren't oldtimers. I followed Bill Walton when he played at UCLA. Then he got drafted by the Blazers and went to Portland. Maybe it was the timing, but he underwent a striking change of public image. Brent Mussberger christened him Mountain Man because of his shaggy hair and beard. Can't remember any other white player at the time who went for that kind of look. Julius Erving and others got major afros, but most white players go long hair and mustaches, and that was about it.

Anyway, I remember at the time wondering: Did Walton do that and become a vegetarian because he happened to end up in Portland? Or did he actually bring California values north to his new home?

Bill Walton was a treasured member of our community. While in Portland he lived in NW Portland, west of the Thurman Street bridge.

He even knew a cool part of town before others.
