I've worked in retail and been a barista. I've been on craigslist, indeed, etc. but doesn't seem to help.

Any locals willing to give me a hand and tell me if there's any jobs I'm missing?

Try the Oregon Employment Department website. Other than that, just pound the pavement and look for signs, or just go in and ask.

The Employment Department also has a list of Job Networking groups. Go visit those and get to know people who'll be able to help you.

Unfortunately the types of jobs you're looking for are in high demand.

Why would you move here without a job?

I am sorry to say there is no magic wand or special trick. You are in an area where there is a huge deal of competition. I would say it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time. That and some good old fashioned luck. You have to keep on looking and don't stop. It's going to be more of a matter of attrition now more than anything else.

I really hope you have means on which to keep yourself going while you are job hunting. In the meantime, best of luck to you.

If your young go for jimmy johns or some retail. I moved here a year ago and tried retail but they want young folk!! I worked in legal but laws here are different and didn't want to do that anymore. Good thing my husband got a transfer here or we wud be sol. I enrolled in grooming school that has job placement to get a job. When they say jobs r scarce believe it.

From what I am told and this is just word of mouth, fast food places often have a high turn over. It may be worth your while to just hit those places all over the city and see if any are hiring. Since many are concentrated in the large shopping malls, those might be your first options.

Another place would be the airport. After looking for quite some time, I know someone who got a job working at a store there. You just have to keep at it and hope you will hit a place where someone else has moved on. Don't wait around for somone to tell you there may be something you have missed. Get out there and scour the landscape for yourself.

What are those trades? If they are not in demand or there is a lot of competition with others for them, maybe you should worry a little bit. In any case, it would be a good idea to see what the need for those trades are if you haven't alread before you move.
