Hi, I will be moving at the end of September from Pensacola FL to Portland OR and I made the drive in March going through Sacramento and up into Oregon. I did not enjoy the mountain passes, truthfully they frightened the heck out of me... what would be some alternative routes that would provide me with going through the least amount of mountains??

Driving all the way to Los Angeles, then going up I-5 is probably your best bet.

Reno to Sacramento is absolutely gorgeous though, especially in the winter with snow in the trees. it shouldn't be too bad in late September weather wise.

The only way to avoid real mountain passes, would be to go like to Las Vegas then head out north through Nevada on small roads, and up through Oregon to the Columbia Gorge and then west to Portland. But ... that's a lot of backroads with not many services. And if you're going to live in Portland ... you're gonna have to get used to mountains!

Unless it was the passes on I-5 around Ashland/Medford that scared her. There really isn't a way to get from FL to OR without driving across some mountains.

How about 101 along the coast? Start just north of San Francisco.

I-10 to I-5 and straight north. You can't get into Oregon without a trip through a pass unless you come by boat or go all the way to the coast.

Even US-101 north of Eureka is pretty steep right around Orick. I've hit snow there in late spring.

If you take I-5 from anywhere in CA, north to OR, you'll hit the highest point on the entire freeway at the CA/OR border with an elevation of 4,310. I can see why you didn't like that drive. You have to go over a handful of passes. But I have no clue how to get here without going over some mountain pass. Even if you cut straight across to CA, you still go through the Cajon Summit which is just as high, but not as twisty.

'Nother vote for for I-10 to I-5. I usually plan on passing Los Angeles late at night. Houston same thing. Plan on driving the south passes into on I-5 during mid day. Should be zero issues in early Sept. Later in the year odds of ice and snow are greater daily.

101 is pretty but not for making any kind of time. Your arms would be sore from all the twisty stuff north into Oregon. Nothing but work driving it at night.

Love Pensacola BTW.
