That was Clackamas. It's good then that it's easy and straightforward to get a CC there. Although people in the mall with guns didn't use them when the guy was shooting so their use as a deterrent or defensive weapon seems limited in such a circumstance.

It's still a gun friendly state for the most part and will likely remain that way. The Oregon constitution states "The people shall have the right to bear arms for the defence (sic) of themselves, and the State, but the Military shall be kept in strict subordination to the civil power[.]"

Portland cannot supercede the State Constitution.

I didn't find owning a gun here any more difficult than in Arizona. Although, open carrying in Oregon is legal with a CC, I wouldn't try it. No different from AZ really, people get nervous, and after seeing some of the dirt merchants that open carry in AZ I can see why..are they really law abiding citizens? Some of them don't look it. I think you are always better of concealed. Open carry is not permitted in Portland and some other cities but as far as I know most mid valley cities don't prohibit open carry. I don't think Milwaukie, Gresham or Hillsboro do either.

These guys here have the 411. go to the FAQ.
Oregon's Only No Compromise Gun Lobby - Oregon Firearms Federation

Portland cannot supercede the State Constitution.

Be careful saying this, especially the wording...... As its mostly wrong.

Within Portland and other cities they can "regulate" loaded firearms in "public places". law gets murky even if you have a CHL.

Check OFF and familiarize your self with the law, print it out, carry it in your car.

I have found Oregon and even more so Washington, to be gun friendly states. Portland is not the entire region.

There was a guy at the Clackamas mall with a CC. He did not fire at the shooter because of the people running behind the shooter.

There's a big divide between urban and rural. City dwellers don't have anything to shoot at but each other. On a farm, a gun is just another tool, like a shovel.

That is true.

When you get out of that weird cocoon that exists in the population centers of the Willamette Valley, people tend to think about guns rationally instead of emotionally.

I started doing some research when I moved up here. I can't recall exactly what I read, so I'm generalizing. But I recall reading how the laws are different in different counties (or was it cities). So if you can CC in one county, cross the line, you could be doing something illegal now. Or carry your gun one way in a car, go across a line and oops, illegal.

I found this site awhile back. Lots of good info. Read up.

I just did a quick skim of the FAQ I posted above. I think it's the City of Portland that has different laws. Anyhow, great info on the site. Read it. And if anything I said is wrong, just ignore me.

After Clackamas then, should society's response be to put even more guns on the street? Is a heavily armed society more or less prone to use their weapons?

When statistics from the heavily-armed US are compared with other countries, our murder and crime rates are higher - FAR higher. I can understand how people feel worried about the violence and want to defend themselves, but the news proves to us every day that arming ourselves is not the way to a safer society.

The question then remains, what is?

* - your question assumes one part equals the other.

It is overly simplistic to consider volume of firearms as a key statistic when evaluating causes of violence.

Violence against one another is caused many things including by lack of moral compass, different cultural values and a myriad of dysfunction brought on the great society movement of Lyndon Johnson.

No other country is as culturally diverse as the USA, so comparisons are no good.
Most of the violent crime in USA is committed in black communites by blacks killing other blacks.

99% of America is law abiding and lives by decent values. There is no reason to take away the rights of many in an attempt to fix the problems of the few.

We are way off topic now though.
