I have a question. I moved back to Portland recently after moving to Arizona for graduate school and start my teaching career. While I lived there I had this friend in Portland and we would talk on the phone often about my move back. She would talk and talk about riding her bike to PSU, how Mississippi has changed, and everything else that's changed in Portland since 2006. Her enthusiasm was fun for the first week I got back. She showed me around town, going on and on and on about how wonderful it is.

A week or so after I got back we were going to dinner and she was talking away about Portland this and Portland that and started talking about how green Portland is and then burst into tears! I was caught off guard and asked her what's wrong. She just said that "it makes her emotional" and after she gathered herself she just continued on talking about bicycles and trolley tracks and food carts as she dabbed away tears. She said that she was just so "full of emotion" about the city. I finally had to ask her to stop talking about Portland specifically because it was all she would talk about! Have you experienced anyone like this?

When did emotions become "unhealthy"?

Oops. I guess I should have titled it "When Someone's Love for Portland Becomes a Bit Much and/or Monopolizes Conversation."

I think that pretty much applies to any subject that people obsess over. It's not Portland specific, you could replace Portland with kittens, or football. Some people have social skills issues or are clueless that they monopolize the conversation. You either change the subject or get new friends.

Maybe your friend took ecstasy before dinner. She sounds like she could have been high.

I am leaning towards that. Some people obsess over things a bit too much. I always get a little misty eyed when I am flying into Portland cause I always feel like I am finally home.

Portland holds a very big place in my heart, but I've never gone that far. Obviously she was very excited that she got to share something with you that she loved and be your tour guide.

I am a bigger fan of Portland than people who grew up here...most people think I am from here. haha. But for me, this place "works", so it's not surprising
