Advertisements

I wonder if this might be because the west side attracts transplanted commuters working in Beaverton, Hillsboro, etc. These folks bring their values and beliefs with them when they move to town.

Advertisements from religious organizations (any) just seem odd to me. Like doctors and lawyers that advertise, it cheapens the image and the message. That's just my opinion; the evangelizing that I find weird works just fine for other people. I'm genuinely happy for anyone who has found a spiritual path that is meaningful
to them, but get annoyed when someone claims that their path is the only
"real" one so I should change mine. Rather than having religious organizations advertising, knocking on doors, mailing unwanted leaflets, etc I'd like to see high school curricula require a world religions course for graduation. Let qualified visitors to class talk and hand out leaflets there, and let the next generation make up their own mind without billboards, etc.

I would say that the Roseburg/Medford corridor is Oregon's "Bible Belt". I find that Washington County is not overly religious compared to the suburban areas of other medium to large metro areas, and I think the statistics bear that out. That being said, if people want to find a church in the area that's a good fit for them or just want to explore, they should have no problem finding something that fits their needs.

I was born & raised in Beaverton (later Aloha). I spent my first 20 years in the area. It's been 4 years since I visited the 'burbs, and yes there were more Christians in those parts than anywhere in Portland (lived on the east side abt. 3 years).

However, after living in the south (NC, FL) for a combined total of 10 years, I find it hard to refer to any part of Portland as a bible belt of anything.

With the all the junk and vulgarity spewed out there and you have an issue when a group wants to save your soul. And, yes, I understand you don't believe. But understand the intent is sincere
