In August I plan on driving to Oregon, ending up in Portland and flying home. I'd like to donate my minivan to a worthwhile organization, perhaps one assisting Veterans, Battered Women with kids, the elderly or other disadvantaged communities.

The vehicle is in good condition (I trust it to get us cross country), it's a Dodge Grand Caravan 2005 with about 170k miles, well maintained.

Any suggestions from locals on worthy organizations?

Not quite on target but, I donated a vehicle to the Oregon Humane Society. It was quick and easy. The Humane society appreciates all kinds of donations from office supplies to pet food.

Generous of you to donate a vehicle but keep in mind that you can't deduct the book value .
I believe you're only allowed to deduct the actual selling price and in many cases they just send them to salvage which is too bad because many more people would donate if they could claim full value on their taxes

My Portland based cars go here for donation:
Drive Away Hunger | Car Donations and Sales | Portland Rescue Mission

Very ez infrastructure and near PDX (They will probably drop you off)
1) No Auction involved = more money to the organization (unless car is not repairable, then it may get sold)
2) Career / skill development - putting needy people to work fixing cars
3) This organization does a lot for the community (300,000+ meals / yr + very nice shelters for family / women, and lots of rehab and placement services).

Of course there are many other options (Usually goes to an auction and sells for under $500... I buy my cars at local auctions, sometimes as cheap as $35)

While I really am sad we are STUCK with a corporate, rather than community owned Public Broadcasting system... Vehicle Donation . Support | OPB

It is so nice to travel every week and get REAL PUBLIC broadcasting
