I know some will say this is just right wing propaganda and that it really is not THAAAT BAD.

I have come to conclusion that people of Portland and to some extent Oregon, actually wish to see this place descend into a dystopian craphole.

I would say that it is right-wing propaganda AND it is that bad. Referring to Portland as a "Democrat-led city" in the headline, when that is immaterial to the story, is clearly propaganda, whether or not it is factual, as the story focuses on a statewide ballot initiative and it's effect on the streets of Portland, not local politics.

Things are bad, no doubt, especially with people being wacked out on drugs in public. I have worked downtown for the last 8 years. For most of that time, I have said that most of the descriptions of needles and filth were exaggerated, but in the last year, they have become more accurate. Just yesterday I saw a woman standing right in front of the CVS at the corner of 4th and Harrison openly smoking heroin off a piece of foil while standing in the middle of the sidewalk with people walking all around her. That would have been unheard of before 2020, but is now not even surprising. I didn't vote for measure 110, and I hope another ballot measure repeals it.

The "Democrat led city" comment is material to the causes of what you describe. In particular, Portland's and Oregon's drift towards more progressive Democrat movements is precisely the cause of this crap.

The analogy is that Portland and Oregon are essentially rewarding dogs for pissing on the carpet instead of rubbing their noses in it and popping them hard in effort to get them to make better choices.

Then Portland OR disincentives the hard working tax payer from coming/staying here by taking more from them to house/care for the "carpet pissing" dogs.

Makes no sense.

Not saying Portland hasn't gone downhill, but The Daily Mail, nothing but a tabloid rag.

Overall, we rate Daily Mail Right Biased and Questionable due to numerous failed fact checks and poor information sourcing.

Nothing will change until the Portland electorate wakes up and begins voting differently. As long as they put ideology ahead of quality of life and safety, they are going to be on their way to spell Detroit.

They aren't alone. San Franciso and Seattle are basically all on the same track.

The voters are not stupid, they are just inflexible in voting for responsible politicians. I think they are by and large disgusted with the homeless problem, drug addiction, and drug overdoses, but the problem is anybody who runs who has the promise to fix these problems, somebody says "abortion" or "gun violence" or "homophobe" or "climate change", and they vote against the guy and vote for the woke Leftist.

Portland is doomed.

It is just human nature at this point. Probably, a lot of the electorate who was there 20 or 30 years ago who were open to voting for a different type of candidate, have mostly moved away from Portland, so what is left is mostly the ideological voters who can't allow themselves to support anybody who has the promise to fix these problems.

It is what it is. It is sad. You hate hearing about. Every day.

I don't disagree. This particular article is pretty accurate though and provides a lot a factually correct, numbered data. Plus photos and experiences of those of us currently stuck here (by choice or not) can attest to the truth of the article and the reality that like it or not, a large segment of the population here explicitly or implicitly supports these terrible practices.

If they didn't - it would not exist.

To me a large part of issue on west coast is ability to pass law via Proposition. This bypasses a lot of intellectually honest dialogue that should occur in a Republic where we elect representatives to act on our behalf.

The practice should be abolished as frankly, the "mob" is not good at making quality decisions.

Do you have something else? The Daily Mail has crashed my computer one too many times; I don't click those links anymore.

Bad news alert...they will NEVER change or wake up. 50 years after Detroit's collapse (I lived it) they still voted in a Dem Mayor...TWICE! The uber left never learns, or unlearns their programming from the media who feeds their weak-minded hive personailities.

Portland is lost, just write it off and move on....hope is futile.

Daily mail? lol.

It is a national problem, and includes red and blue states. The attempt to draw causation and single out Portland is why you shouldn’t use tabloids to be informed.

We drive down to Portland several times a year, and have since about 1995. We were there last in May, for the first time since Covid, and were amazed at the increase in homeless and graffiti compared to before. Still, I work in Seattle, and Portland has a long way to go to get as bad as their neighbor to the north. Definitely going downhill, but we still enjoy going there, in fact will be driving down there tomorrow for the day.
