I love love love buying new furniture! Sure moving is an absolute pain but when I find a couch I love there is no way I'm leaving it behind. I'd probably buy a new table (if I could afford to) whenever I saw one I liked...but my couch, she is coming with me.

I also don't shop at the spendy places. I can go to a locally owned furniture store and spend half the amount on the same quality stuff that places like pottery barn have. I love supporting the local businesses and I feel they give much more personalized attention to you.

I can't really imagine individuals ever stopping buying furniture for their homes. I would hate to move into a home where everything is picked out for me...but maybe that's just me.

This is Oregon, you grab a saw, and axe, and a chisel and make your own!

Doesn't anyone know about Macys Home store in Clackamas Town Center? It has the best selection at very reasonable prices, and they has 0 interest financing!
Check it out, you'll be pleasantly surprised. I also love the consignment stoores.

Oops. Sorry about spelling errors in my last post. "Have 0 % financing" and "stores".

Everyone has different tastes and styles. That's cool, this is my story in case it helps...

While looking for living room stuff for our apartment, I was really disappointed by what I saw in furniture stores. It seemed like everything above IKEA grade was designed for tasteless, mobidly obese people living in huge McMansions with no sense of style...the kind of thing suburban yuppies love because it fills up a huge empty room. I realize this is mega-popular, but it just gives me hives. It all felt like it was designed for those who have given up on life, and come home every day from a job they hate and need to watch football and badly edited cooking shows while scarfing hot pockets and yelling at their kids.

I started to find a lot of really amazing things in vintage shops, but it was frustrating because apparently at some point the cheesy 1950s stuff I love the look and construction of has become "mid-century" and like anything hipsters admire, has skyrocketed in price. Portland has some amazing vintage stores, but they're not for the faint of heart, budget-wise. Plus every time we'd find a piece we loved, it was always just a little too something (expensive, worn, wide, narrow, etc).

Then we found this factory/store down in Tigard. I don't remember the name but will ask my wife when she comes home. It was AMAZING. They make everything themselves, and mostly sell couches, loveseats, and chairs. They have a dozen or so basic designs, hundreds of fabric coverings, and will make absolutely any combination you want out of them for a reasonable price in about 3-4 weeks. Furthermore, they'll let you visit and browse as long as you like with no pressure at all. It's the total opposite of a mall store experience.

Like I said, to each their own, but that was totally my style. We got exactly what we wanted, didn't have to pay an arm and a leg, and it's brand new so it'll be in perfect shape when we get it (and no worrying about creepy crawlies from a previous owner).

My leather sofa was purchased at City Liquidators about 8 years ago. Wasn't particularly cheap but probably cheaper than buying it somewhere else. Their furniture selection is worth checking out. I remember couches and chairs and bedroom furniture. Can't remember if there were dining furniture.

I've gotten all kinds of stuff for our new place from there, including hard to find "drafting" chairs for my weird computer desk (I'm tall and I like everything bar-height or higher). I can definitely attest that they have dining chairs, tables, and complete sets among everything else. Every time we go back we seem to discover a whole part of the store we didn't explore last time...I'm convinced it reconfigures itself like Hogwart's.

I am moving to Portland in a few months with what I can fit in my car (I have a tiny Saab). I have the same question! Hoping I can score some gently used furniture on Craigslist. But need to buy the bed, couch, etc...new.
