Nikyt99:

Don't let TechmanOR scare you, Portland is a safe city. Compared to other cities it is very safe. Reading some of his posts will unnecessarily raise unwarranted concerns in someone who has never visited Portland, Coming from a real honest BIG city, someone would think parts of Portland are like the worst areas of the south-side of Chicago, or Oakland, CA., or our Nation's Capitol. He is, of course, entitled to express his opinions and warnings. Just please take into context what he is comparing the actual crime statistics to.

I ask you also to just be aware that out in the 'burbs, you will not have any of the close in neighborhood "walk to small shops" and social gather places. The 'burbs are just that -- 'burbs.

The local newspaper on-line classified has lots and lots of job openings for RNs and other nursing staff positions. Oregon Local News, Breaking News, Sports & Weather - OregonLive.com

Aside: Some of the larger hospitals, (I call them health care factories because they are so large) have light rail stops almost right at their door (Kaiser and Provident for example.) Until you get here and see for yourself, due to the geography, the Portland area is not all that auto friendly... Parking spaces are limited. Try Google Maps and hit the Terrain button.

For real state, start with Susan's web page with a surprising amount of information:
Susan's Online Guide to Portland Oregon - The City of Roses
on Portland's neighborhoods.
Then try the multiple listing service web site:
MIS
but to be honest I never used that site.

I wish you the best on your house and job hunting.

Phil

Default Thank you to all! We're moving!

Thank you to everyone for all your detailed information. We just got back from Portland and loved it. Everyone's suggestions were taken into account and helped a lot while we were there. We ended up loving downtown. We wanted to be close but have the convenience of suburb things cause we have kids, so we ended up wanting to move somewhere near Cedar Mills. We'll be making the move by springtime, maybe sooner!

Cedar Mill is a wonderful community. I'm sure you have seen during your visit how accessible we are to downtown to the Pearl and downtown with a short drive through Forest Park. No need to get on a freeway. We moved from the Sellwood area in the 1990's and have never regretted the decision.
