This is going to be difficult for me wordsmith without it sounding off-beat, or anti-Oregon, which it not intended..

On a sunny, very warm Portland afternoon I went for a long walk. I noticed some, shall we say, 'cavalier attitudes' toward trash container lids being shut. Plus I have noticed a lot of street walking while munching of snacks and lunches by lots of people all over Portland.

So, I am just curious, why doesn't the entire Portland area have an epic infestation of Rats and other rodents worse than NYC's reputation? I did a search on this board but only found a few references to SW Portland having a rodent problem.

Did I miss something? or is this also like that PNW not having mosquitoes thing?

Again, I am not bashing Portland, just curious.

I presume that agricultural heavy usage in Clackamas County would have it's normal share of farmland rodent problems. But then again I haven't of heard much rodent problems from there either.

Phil

The biggest trash can pests here are raccoons and possums.

Portland has rats, Norway rats. There are also lots of mosquitoes too if you happen to be near some standing water in the warmer months. Here is a link to a news article about rats in Portland.

Oh we have rodents. I had never even heard of a "nutria" prior to moving here. Now I have them near my house since I am near a river.

I think it varies by neighborhood. We're lucky to have plenty of cats in ours -- no mice, no rats, just a few squirrels.

They live happily in the lake at the Rodadendrum Test Gardens in Eastmoreland.

To the OP: As far as rodents, my kitty would happily disagree on their scarcity.

I'm also not sure that using New York City as a benchmark for what rat populations elsewhere are like is a reasonable methodology. I think NYC is a unique case.

I seem to remember inner SE Portland having a huge Norway rat problem in the late eighties and early nineties.
I have not heard anyone complaining about rats for a long time.

Mice on the other hand......................

I worked in pest control in Portland in the early 90's. I would have to say that rodents problems I encountered were pretty localized. Usually centered on some food source. I rarely have seen "wild rats" wandering about in the street. Urban residential rats almost always had some food source that caused a sudden boom in population that brought attention to their presence. Not long after I would get a call. Tracking down the food source usually did the job of preventing "new rats" the current population was dealt with in the conventional manner. Problem solved. I had seasonal (fall/winter) mouse problems in my home in North Portland... until I adopted a cat. No mice after that = ).
