I wanted simple names, easy to say and spell, that went together with the last name in nice way and were obviously female/male. From there it was just a matter of finding names that I had no previous associations to and that I could see myself saying outloud for the rest of my life.
We choose names that we thought were not to common for our kids to have 6 in their class with the same name, but we didn't want them to be self concious about there names. Our granddaughter is having a little boy: because she and hubby were born in Texas they are naming him after a town or city in texas, they just haven't decided which one: they know it won't be Austin or Dallas, too common.
Jackson is a name I just happened to like, while Martin is my boyfriend's dad's name. Layla I also liked (it means "night" in Arabic) and Victoria is my godmother's name.
I like traditional names that can age well and ones that are very basic but classy.
My favorite names:
Boys:
Jack
William
Benjamin
Edward

Except for a few, this sounds like roll call at an old age home to me.
