Word is out today that the United Football League (UFL) will give it another go in 2012 starting September 21. This will be the 4th season coming up. probably 4 teams again with a vague possibility of a 5th team joining in. It seems they have been picked up by CBS-SN for television. Anybody have any ideas how this league can stabilize itself a bit? I kind of like the idea of a competing second league, even if it is not a straight up competitor with the NFL. Of course the easy way is to become a minor league of the NFL, however the NFL has already apparently nixed that idea.

They are not trying to compete with the NFL. Per their own website, their goal is to enter some kind of deal with the NFL to become a developmental league.

If that is their aim, would it not make sense to play in the NFL's offseason when they can develop talent and give that talent a fair run at making the roster in training camp?

Looks like 4 teams again. Their was a rumor of a 5th team, but sounds like it didn't work out. Too bad. Schedules should be out tomorrow. Hope things work out for them.

I'm looking forward to hitting a few games this year. A pretty fun product.

IMO a spring season would not work well if the league wanted to get associated with the NFL. It is really really unrealistic to expect a bunch of guys battling for a NFL roster spot to play an 8 game schedule in the spring THEN play another 16 in the fall. It would destroy their bodies.

It can work in fall, start it right after camp. If teams see promise in a guy they don't have to cut him they can continue to own his rights and send him to the UFL and call him up or go sign another UFL guy part way through the season if someone is performing well or an NFL player gets injured.

To be fair though Omaha doesn't have a facility for a spring team so I hope the UFL sticks around and stays in the fall.

Omaha Nighthawks sold out every home game their first year. Over 23K per game in a baseball stadium.

In their second season last year attendance dropped to the 16,500 level in a new baseball stadium downtown. Most people attribute the drop in attendance to the funding issues the league had. They screwed with the schedule and had publicity issues last season which hurt some enthusiasm. Same issues seem to be happening this season as well.
