In the 2008 season, my Pittsburgh steelers beat their tough division rivals 3 times. Twice during the regular season and in the AFC title game, that is one of the most intense rivalry in the NFL today. I really didn't think they could have beaten these guys 3 times in a season, they were all tough physical games .
I think the strongest teams also have the toughest schedules. The NFC West teams are all strong enough to at least split with the Seahawks. Ditto for the 49ers. The Broncos are not likely to go 4-0 vs the NFC West, nor do I expect them to sweep their own division this year. The Colts and Saints are both solid teams and have favorable schedules, but I don't think they are so good they can go 16-0. The Patriots are a good team that looks improved over last season and has a favorable schedule, but even them I see no better than 14-2.
That 2007 Patriots team really did accomplish something special, even if they did come up short in the Super Bowl.
Someone else will eventually go undefeated and win it all. Sorry Dolphins, but it will happen at some point. Having said that, it's not happening this year.
Well, considering the NFL has been around for 90+ years and its only happened once... I don't think its a given to ever happen again.. especially if the NFL expands the season to 18 games...
I agree with most that I can't see any team going 16-0. It's just too hard to do with how teams rest players the last few weeks, and divisional opponents are almost impossible to sweep. I could see Seattle coming the closest, just because that defense keeps them in almost every game, but if a team gets to say 12-0 or 13-0, then they usually have clinched their division and a first round bye, so at that point they usually rest starters, which makes it harder to go to keep winning games. I remember when New Orleans and Indy both started like 13-0 and then both teams rested their starters and lost games the next week.
Seattle or Denver if only to pick a team or two. Odds are against any team going 16-0.
