The Indianapolis Colts took care of some free agent business on Monday, and it raises some interesting questions. The team has re-signed free agent tight end Dwayne Allen. Pro Football Talk is reporting the four-year deal is worth up to $29.4 million. The deal includes $12 million in year one (likely including signing bonus), $7 million in year two, and $5 million in year three. The deal reportedly includes $16 million guaranteed, but that is likely not all fully guaranteed.
Allen signs the deal coming off his worst season as a professional. He played in 13 games, and had 16 receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown. Through four years (only playing one year in 2013), he has 91 receptions for 1,045 yards and 13 touchdowns.
It is safe to say this means Coby Fleener likely will land a slightly better deal.Fleener had 54 receptions for 491 yards and three touchdowns last season. Through the same four years, he has 183 receptions for 2,154 yards and 17 touchdowns, and has not missed a game since his rookie season. Allen is a strong red zone presence and quality blocker, but Fleener has been the more active of the two. The Colts very well could get both extended, but my guess is Fleener walks.
What the heck is Grigson doing????? Allen spends all his time on his stupid local talk show!! He hasnt finished a season yet!!
Fleener may have started out ruff......but he has slowly matured and he has speed to keep LB's honest!

Health issues aside, Allen is clearly a more talented and complete tight end than Fleener. This sounds like a typical Grigson contract -- front-loaded so that Allen can be cut without much dead cap, in case it doesn't work out. Say what you want about Grigson, but he manages the cap well, and I think that's why Irsay likes him.

CLEARLY HOW?? What evidence has be shown to that statement???
Good move for Fleener. I live him as a Saint, if the offensive line can improve to keep Brees upright. Brees' window is closing and Flenner could become Jimmy Graham lite...
Didn't the Colts sign a RB and release Frank Gore. Gore was nothing to write home about this past season.

The numbers are clearly on Fleeners side!
Have you ever seen Fleener try to block? By choosing Allen over the Fleener, the Colts clearly see protecting luck as a priority. Fleener fits in better with the Saints, I agree with another poster. He can be like a Jimmy Graham lite with the Saints, never would have happened with the Colts.

I didn't think they released Gore, could be wrong though. I thought he signed a several year deal last year. Colts need to protect Luck, obvious from last season.
Fans talk about TEs, but depending on team and scheme, not as easy as it sounds. Some team have a scheme that demands all players be able to block and for whatever reason not all TEs get the concept.

Not sure what "Jimmy Graham lite" is but Fleener is probably best not compared to Jimmy unless you're saying that neither can block. haha I do think Fleener will have a very good year with the sAints much like Watson this past season.
