Agree with the last poster. I love Aretha Franklin, who isn't a Motown fan? But good God that rendition was too long and in my opinion terrible. If I can't express that opinion without being called a racist I think we have identified who the racist is here.
I agree that the racist card is used way too early & way too often (like a battering ram) without much thought, research or validity. The people that do so never seem to have any real proof other than their own thoughts. It's sad that people do this at the drop of a hat.
Regarding Aretha, apparently she was never actually signed at Motown, per commentary from the Soulful Detroit Forum. Wikipedia seems to be in agreement with that. She actually signed with Columbia and later Atlantic. The thought is that Berry Gordy wanted a different style at the time.

You can't just play the race card every time someone is critical of an AA. It dilutes the power of the charge when it really applies. I actually got in it here with posters who claimed the AA Little League team from Chicago who was caught with overrage players was punished because of racists who singled them out because they were black. It was amazing. No they were singled out and punished because they CHEATED.
Well, the anthem at the Penn and Wisconsin game was awesome! The schools marching bands played together, 600 of them, and you could hear the audience singing! Way to go, it was great.

Yep! The best renditions of the Star Spangled Banner always come from military bands & chorale groups, and from university marching bands.
The continued disrespect -- by the look-at-me "American Idol" rejects (and all other divas) as they embarrass themselves by screeching out America's National Anthem -- needs to end, as they are becoming more and more selfish and humiliating.
Well, i guess i am in the minority (again) because I loved Aretha's rendition.. it sounded like the crowd did to.
I am going to guess that 98% of you never heard Marvin Gayes rendition at the 1983 NBA All Star Game.. oh well.. if you didn't like Arethas, you wont like Marvins...
Variety is the spice of life.. well, it is for me.. but i guess not for everyone..
If you're talking about the one on Thanksgiving, I think it was in the Detroit Lions game, yeah, it was BAD. Whoever signing it was old so I gave her some slack but it was truly awful.
