Until about five years ago my wife made due with a small hand-held mixer. I didn't realize what a chore she had cut out for her with the hand-held until I had to help her with preparing a Thanksgiving dinner, and was charged with whipping the cream with the hand-held mixer. After the rush of Christmas was over, I took her shopping for a new mixer, and what we settled on was the Kitchen Aid, Artisan Series, Stand Mixer with Pouring Shield.
This mixer is a solid choice for anyone who has any sort of need of a heavy duty, all-purpose mixer, and who wants the flexibility of a much more expensive machine. It looks like an old fashioned mixer in its design, which lends it a rather nostalgic quality what with its stainless steel trim. It also feels like a mixer - like a mixer that you can actually use to accomplish something. Its heavy base keeps it sitting securely on the countertop, it has an easy-to-grasp ergonomic handle, and the 325 watt motor mixes even the heaviest of mixtures with hardly a hiccup. It even has a tilt-back design which allows for easy access to the bowls and blades.
The KitchenAid has a ten speed solid state control and even has a power hub so that additional attachments can be installed, though we have yet to need anything other than what it came with. It comes with a 5 quart stainless steel bowl, three attachments, including a wire whip, a coated flat beater, and a coated dough hook, and a pouring shield that prevents any unnecessary spillage.
My one complaint with the KitchenAid is that the model we chose, which is Empire Red, does tend to scratch easily, though overall it doesn't detract from the overall appeal and durability of the machine. I would highly recommend this product to anyone in the market for an affordable (we paid $329) and well-built machine.
