I've been known to doze off in random places all of my life. When I did it in college, no one batted an eye. It's not unusual to spot students passed out in random spots on campus. But in the real world, I've gotten some pretty hostile responses just for sleeping. A completely natural bodily function, right?
I have put out of places. I have woken up seeing people giving me dirty looks. I have been questioned by cops whenever I fall asleep in my car. I had a friend who was fired for sleeping in her car during break time. It was against her company's rules. WTF?
I'm not lead to believe that this is abnormal behavior. There are tons of medications and health conditions that cause drowsiness. Also, insomnia/sleep deprivation is extremely common, and is known to cause daytime sleepiness.
Sometimes you just get sleepy in a public place. It is much safer to nap wherever you are than to get behind the wheel while drowsy, right? People shouldn't be harassed. Why do some people find public sleeping a disturbing thing?
I have seen students in a university library slumped over, sleeping. I understood it totally. That summer when I was doing grad work I was tired every day! I think if someone is drunk and asleep, then I am grossed out. But otherwise, not so much.
I would consider it high risk and a good way to get yourself attacked or robbed.
Because it is an indication of homelessness, depending upon where the person was asleep, there is a possibility that they might be dangerous. Even a small possibility is a good reason to give them a wide berth.
OP, I suggest that you have a talk with your doctor about narcolepsy. Falling asleep at odd times in public places isn't normal behavior for an adult.
I fail to see the problem. I used to doze off on the commuter train though, and a guy groped me. That kind of sucked.
My father used to take me to the park with a newspaper when I was a kid. He would always fall asleep on the park bench while I was playing. Other children's mothers would tell me not to go over to the "sleeping homeless man" when I would go to wake him up. LOL>
I don't find it disturbing, I just find it rather risky. I always think people who sleep in public will get robbed in their sleep.
I agree with this--it's why I don't sleep on airplanes. Honestly, I've never been so tired that I couldn't wait until I got home to take a nap.
