My car is also 14 years old and well maintained. Every time I take it in for routine upkeep or replacement parts, I just keep muttering my mantra - "It's better than a car payment, It's better than a car payment, It's better than a car payment."
When I sell my house in a few years I'll buy a "newer" older car and pass mine on to one of the young folks in my family.
Sounds like a plan! Amazing how we become so attached to certain belongings, even if they've nearly worn out.
Agreed, I feel no need to spend and spend what I worked so hard to earn. Most people say I save too much money!
I save a lot too -- not because I'm thrifty, but because material goods don't do it for me. Instead, I value intangible stuff that people take for granted (books, reading, writing, knowledge).
I was born a hearing person. I was deaf by 17 years old. Yes I want what I cant have, hearing?
No dollar sign included in this reply which was included in all the other reply's I just read.
I have an uncle like this. Has 6 cars, 3 of which are worth over $40k but he always wants a new one. Some people can never be satisfied because what they are lacking within themselves they try to fill with material wealth/goods.
Some of the happiest and most calm people I know are dirt poor...like no money for bread poor and they keep on smiling.
I find the less I have the better I feel. Dumping bags off at Goodwill is not a feeling to be underestimated. I also notice the people with the big mortgage, the Harley, the 2 cars, the 3 kids, the jobs, rarely go on vacations and experience new places and cultures. What a nightmare life that would be for me.
Be happy with what you have is my motto.
