That's why many states used to add fluoride to the water, because we drink it. It's just recently that bottled water became the 'norm'. Most bottled water is probably from the tap anyway.
I bought a bottle of water at the airport last week that said it was bottled from "the municipal water supply of Allentown, PA." I rolled my eyes, but it's the airport, what are you gonna do?
Ah yes, all those dissolved solids in two water, much worse for us than whatever leeches from the cheap plastic bottles into the pristine well water that's pumped from springs.
You do know that untreated well water is not recommended for infants? Wonder why that is...
Tap water is made for drinking. But I guess you just think it's toilet water and we all should be drinking and watering our crops with Brawndo.
The US enjoys some of the cleanest and cheapest water in the world. Piped right to my sink for pennies a cubic yard. And you think it's made for flushing poop...

Chlorine is what they ad to bring the bacteria count up at an "acceptable" level.

That all depends on what state you are in.
In Michigan our wells have to be 100% bacteria free.....it is pass/fail.
The tap water is treated to an "acceptable" level.......not fecal coliform free.
I've never heard of tap water being formally intended for drinking. I think it would be impossible to guarantee from the city's position that what comes out of your tap should be drunk. Is the reason people drink from the tap simply because other people do it and no more thought is left to it? That seems like a rediculous approach to dealing with a fundamental regarding our health
So, then, how exactly would you provide drinking water to millions of people living in urban and/or suburban areas? What's your brilliant solution to this "problem"?

Are you from a foreign country? In the US, tap water is chlorinated to kill bacteria and is monitored routinely to ensure that it meets certain water quality standards, precisely so that it can be the primary source of drinking water for the human population.

The construction in major US cities of central water supplies during the mid to late 1800s was precisely to supply safe drinking water.
